Rome began as a small city and grew to be the name of the most powerful empire in the world over the course of about 500 years. The Israelites knew what it meant to be under the power of Rome. Rome had massive armies, brilliant strategists, and they seemed unstoppable. The Israelites, like many other nations around them, had been conquered by other kingdoms before. And they knew that one day the Lord would send a Messiah to set them free. When Jesus preached about the kingdom of God, they would have been very interested in hearing what he had to say.

A kingdom is not just another country or nation. A kingdom is the country that rules over all the other countries under it. And the most common way you would be reminded that you were under the rule of a kingdom was the image on the money you carried and spent. In Israel, they would have looked at the coins they spent and seen the face of the emperor, which was a reminder that they were under his rule. What is the symbol of the Church? What do we carry and claim as the sign of our salvation?

The image of the Church that Christ gives us is the mustard seed. The Kingdom of God is like a mustard seed that grows into the largest of shrubs. If a Roman soldier heard Jesus say that his kingdom was going to be a like a mustard tree, he would have laughed. A powerful kingdom would be like a great cedar which grows 150 feet into the sky. A mustard tree can grow only 10 feet tall at the most. Why does Jesus use such a weak image for the kingdom of God?

It is the same reason that the Church claims the cross as our symbol. Our kingdom does not belong to this world. It does not look anything like this world. Our king reigns in heaven, and while it may look small and weak, nothing can destroy this kingdom. Cedar trees can be cut down. But the mustard tree of the Church remains. Even if you try to remove the mustard tree, it will continue to spring up in new places because its roots run deep.

A man called the Church because he wanted to speak with the priest. I set an appointment and met with him. After that meeting, he told me that he wanted to come back to Church. He came that Sunday. And then the next. And the next. And then he brought his friend with him. And then they started serving in various ministries in the Church. This is how the kingdom of God grows. It is a mysterious way. This kingdom is not just for us. It is for those who are not here yet, who have not yet heard the call to come and follow Jesus. So let us place ourselves under the sign of the Cross, and work to spread the kingdom of God as we minister to our brothers and sisters outside of the Church.

Si un soldado romano hubiera escuchado a Jesús decir que su reino iba a ser como un árbol de mostaza, se habría reído. Un reino poderoso sería como un gran cedro que crece 150 pies en el cielo. Un árbol de mostaza puede crecer solo 10 pies de altura como máximo. ¿Por qué Jesús usa una imagen tan débil para el reino de Dios?

Es la misma razón por la que la Iglesia reclama la cruz como nuestro símbolo. Nuestro reino no pertenece a este mundo. No se parece en nada a este mundo. Nuestro rey reina en el cielo, y aunque parezca pequeño y débil, nada puede destruir este reino. Los árboles de cedro se pueden cortar. Pero el árbol de mostaza de la Iglesia permanece. Incluso si intentas quitar el árbol de mostaza, seguirá brotando en nuevos lugares porque sus raíces son profundas.

Un hombre llamó a la Iglesia porque quería hablar con el sacerdote. Concerté una cita y me reuní con él. Después de esa reunión, me dijo que quería volver a la Iglesia. Vino ese domingo.
