Jesus tells us not to fear those who can destroy the body but fear him who can destroy both body and soul in Gehenna. So what are we afraid of? The answer is so many things. I have been afraid of nightmares. I have been afraid of drowning. I have been afraid of what other people think. And the list goes on and on. Now Jesus is telling me to not be afraid of those things, but be afraid of God? Not quite. He is teaching us that we should fear offending God over everything else.

When we offend God, and we call that sin, we separate ourselves from Him. And ultimately, if we persist in offending God without seeking reconciliation, we will find ourselves separated from Him for eternity. It is so easy to get caught up in our fears.

In the country of El Salvador, there was an archbishop named Oscar. The government was corrupt, but he refused to align with the government. He spoke out for justice and held prayer vigils for victims of state violence. He received many threats from the government, and ultimately during Mass he was shot and killed at the altar. You might think that’s the end of the story. But today St Oscar Romero stands as a witness to the truth of remaining true to God in spite of the opposition. He found eternal life as he not only spoke out for the truth, but remained true to his love for God in the Holy Eucharist.

Think of what would be different if St Oscar followed his fears. He would not have spoken out. He would not have prayed publicly for the victims. He would probably still be alive today. But that is not what Our Lord told his disciples. Hide the truth and stay alive for the next fight. No, he told them to remain faithful to him, and he will acknowledge them before his heavenly father.

How are you and I called to remain faithful? I would suggest one action. Let the Holy Mass be the center of your life. I heard recently that Mass does not begin when the priest walks down the aisle. Mass begins when you leave your house to go to Church. All of you are part of the entrance procession, and the priest concludes the procession. We all are on a journey to the altar to encounter the Risen Lord and receive his Body and Blood. So let us continue to journey together rather than allowing fear to separate us from the love of God.

Jesús nos dice que no temamos a quienes pueden destruir el cuerpo, sino a aquel que puede destruir tanto el cuerpo como el alma en la Gehenna. ¿Entonces de qué tenemos miedo? La respuesta es muchas cosas. He tenido miedo a las pesadillas. He tenido miedo de ahogarme. He tenido miedo de lo que piensen los demás. Y la lista sigue y sigue. ¿Ahora Jesús me dice que no tenga miedo de esas cosas, sino que tema a Dios? No del todo. Nos está enseñando que debemos temer ofender a Dios por encima de todo.

Cuando ofendemos a Dios, y llamamos pecado, nos separamos de Él. Y, en última instancia, si persistimos en ofender a Dios sin buscar la reconciliación, nos encontraremos separados de Él para la eternidad. Es muy fácil dejarse llevar por nuestros miedos.

¿Cómo estamos tú y yo llamados a permanecer fieles? Yo sugeriría una acción. Deja que la Santa Misa sea el centro de tu vida. Recientemente escuché que la misa no comienza cuando el sacerdote camina por el pasillo. La misa comienza cuando sales de casa para ir a la iglesia. Todos vosotros formáis parte de la procesión de entrada, y el sacerdote concluye la procesión. Todos estamos en un viaje hacia el altar para encontrarnos con el Señor Resucitado y recibir su Cuerpo y Sangre. Así que sigamos caminando juntos en lugar de permitir que el miedo nos separe del amor de Dios.
