This weekend we celebrated an important event in the history of our nation. As the fireworks went off and families gathered for barbeque, it was a celebration of our independence as a nation. I have been to many 4^th of July parties and amidst the good food and time with families, there is always a note of sadness, for those people who couldn’t be present to celebrate with us. On the weekend where we celebrate independence, the Church invites us to celebrate another major event that happened about 2000 years ago.

Jesus appointed 72 others whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place that he intended to visit. This is the foundation of the priesthood in the Church. Jesus came to establish a Church, and he established apostles as bishops. Today, he establishes the 72 men as the first priests. In the Old Testament, Moses was the leader. His brother Aaron was the high priest, and his two sons Nadab and Abihu. After them there were the 12 tribes. And finally, the 70 elders who were appointed by God to receive his spirit and prophesy. In that story, 2 people were absent, but they also received the spirit and began prophesying in their own tents. So we see this continuation of what happened in the Old Testament happening with Jesus. He is the head of the Church. He appoints Peter as the high priest. Peter, James, and John were the top 3. Then there were the 12 apostles, and now the 72 men appointed by Christ to proclaim the good news and cast out demons.

Priests are sent today to walk with their flock and guide them to Christ. I have been privileged to walk with you over these past 2 years. But I cannot walk with you from a distance. When you face a sudden illness. When someone passes away. When you struggle with an addiction and nothing you do seems to help. When you need a reminder of how much God loves you. I hope that I can proclaim the good news to you when you need it the most. I want you to encounter Christ as he walks down the streets of Sweetwater and Roscoe. To recognize him in your neighbors, your family members, your friends. And to share the love of Christ with each other.

At a family gathering, often it is the people who are missing who make the biggest impact. So I invite each one of us to pray for each other. For our loved ones who have gone before us. And pray and invite Christ into your homes and gatherings. Christ has conquered sin, death, and the devil. Perhaps the last thing for him to conquer is our hearts when they grow rebellious and stubborn. It is a good thing when our hearts feel that ache from missing someone. Good in that we call them to mind and lift them up in prayer. I pray that our hearts may also feel when Christ is not present so that we may invite him to come and stay with us as he stayed with his disciples.

Este fin de semana celebramos un acontecimiento importante en la historia de nuestra nación. Cuando los fuegos artificiales estallaron y las familias se reunieron para la barbacoa, fue una celebración de nuestra independencia como nación. He estado en muchas fiestas del 4 de julio y en medio de la buena comida y el tiempo con las familias, siempre hay una nota de tristeza, para aquellas personas que no pudieron estar presentes para celebrar con nosotros. En el fin de semana en que celebramos la independencia, la Iglesia nos invita a celebrar otro gran acontecimiento que ocurrió hace unos 2000 años.

Jesús designó a otros 72 a los que envió delante de él en grupos de dos a cada ciudad y lugar que tenía la intención de visitar. Este es el fundamento del sacerdocio en la Iglesia. Jesús vino a establecer una Iglesia, y estableció apóstoles como obispos. Hoy, establece a los 72 hombres como los primeros sacerdotes. En el Antiguo Testamento, Moisés era el líder. Su hermano Aarón era el sumo sacerdote, y sus dos hijos, Nadab y Abiú. Después de ellos estaban las 12 tribus. Pero no puedo caminar contigo desde la distancia. Cuando te enfrentas a una enfermedad repentina. Cuando alguien fallece. Cuando luchas contra una adicción y nada de lo que haces parece ayudar. Cuando necesitas un recordatorio de cuánto te ama Dios. Espero poder proclamarles las buenas nuevas cuando más las necesiten. Quiero que te encuentres con Cristo mientras camina por las calles de Sweetwater y Roscoe. Reconocerlo en tus vecinos, en tus familiares, en tus amigos. Y compartir el amor de Cristo los unos con los otros.

En una reunión familiar, a menudo son las personas que faltan las que tienen el mayor impacto. Así que invito a cada uno de nosotros a rezar los unos por los otros. Por nuestros seres queridos que nos han precedido. Y oren e inviten a Cristo a sus hogares y reuniones. Cristo ha vencido al pecado, a la muerte y al diablo. Tal vez lo último que tiene que conquistar es nuestros corazones cuando se vuelven rebeldes y tercos. Es algo bueno cuando nuestros corazones sienten ese dolor de extrañar a alguien. Bueno en el sentido de que los recordamos y los elevamos en oración. Ruego que nuestros corazones también sientan cuando Cristo no está presente, para que podamos invitarlo a venir y quedarse con nosotros como él se quedó con sus discípulos.
