This past week, I messed up again. Someone was talking to me about something spiritual, and I was distracted on my phone. I felt terrible about this afterwards, but somehow it was just too easy in the moment. It seems like as a society, the wrong things get prioritized. Buy the newest phone, it is so much faster, and it will make your life easier. But what do I end up using my phone for? A distraction from what is right in front of me.

In the Gospel, Martha gets rebuked by our Lord for being distracted. Her work is beautiful. Her hospitality was commendable, but as our Lord noted, she allowed it to become a distraction. I honestly believe that even Mary could have been rebuked if she was distracted in listening to Jesus. But the Gospel highlights the issue. How present are we to the Lord right now?

I admit, it is easy to get distracted in Mass. It’s easy to get distracted in prayer. And the Lord does not blame us for getting distracted. He rather calls us to not remain there!  Now each one of us can claim that we are busy. We have a lot of work to do. God bless you for making it a priority to come to Mass this weekend! That is the first step. Now how can I truly be present here?

There is a famous story of a man who dealt with so much stress and problems at work. And after a long stressful day of work each day, he would drive home, and before entering his house, he would touch a tree outside the house for a minute. Then he would come inside. His wife saw him and asked what he was doing touching the tree, and he said that he left all of the stress and worries of work on that tree so that he would not bring it into the house. For us, what is the tree that we stop to place all of our stress and worries on? I would like to suggest the Cross – the tree of life.

When you come to Mass, come a little early, and stop to pray before the Cross before Mass begins. Let our Lord take on the burdens of your heart, so that we may find rest in this holy place. He says, Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest, says the Lord. Let us come to the Lord, and be present at his feet now, and leave refreshed to be present to the Lord in our work.

La semana pasada, volví a meter la pata. Alguien me estaba hablando de algo espiritual y yo estaba distraído con mi teléfono. Me sentí muy mal por esto después, pero de alguna manera fue demasiado fácil en el momento. Parece que, como sociedad, se priorizan las cosas equivocadas. Compre el teléfono más nuevo, es mucho más rápido y le hará la vida más fácil. Pero, ¿para qué termino usando mi teléfono? Una distracción de lo que está justo frente a mí.

En el Evangelio, Marta es reprendida por nuestro Señor por estar distraída. Su trabajo es hermoso. Su hospitalidad fue encomiable, pero como nuestro Señor señaló, permitió que se convirtiera en una distracción. Honestamente creo que incluso María podría haber sido reprendida si se distraía escuchando a Jesús. Pero el Evangelio pone de relieve la cuestión. ¿Cuán presentes estamos para el Señor en este momento?

Lo admito, es fácil distraerse en Misa. Es fácil distraerse en la oración. Y el Señor no nos culpa por distraernos. ¡Más bien nos llama a no quedarnos allí!  Ahora cada uno de nosotros puede afirmar que está ocupado. Tenemos mucho trabajo por hacer. ¡Dios los bendiga por hacer que sea una prioridad venir a Misa este fin de semana! Ese es el primer paso. Ahora bien, ¿cómo puedo estar realmente presente aquí?

Hay una famosa historia de un hombre que lidiaba con mucho estrés y problemas en el trabajo. Y después de un largo y estresante día de trabajo todos los días, conducía a casa y, antes de entrar a su casa, tocaba un árbol fuera de la casa durante un minuto. Luego entraba. Su esposa lo vio y le preguntó qué estaba haciendo tocando el árbol, y él dijo que dejaba todo el estrés y las preocupaciones del trabajo en ese árbol para no llevarlo a la casa. Para nosotros, ¿cuál es el árbol en el que nos detenemos para depositar todo nuestro estrés y preocupaciones? Me gustaría sugerir la Cruz, el árbol de la vida.

Cuando vengas a Misa, ven un poco más temprano y detente a rezar ante la Cruz antes de que comience la Misa. Deja que nuestro Señor cargue con las cargas de tu corazón, para que podamos encontrar descanso en este lugar santo. Dice: Venid a mí todos los que estáis trabajados y agobiados, y yo os haré descansar, dice el Señor. Acerquémonos al Señor, y estemos presentes a sus pies ahora, y salgamos refrescados para estar presentes ante el Señor en nuestra obra.
