I recently went on a trip with my brother and nephew. During that trip, we spent many hours on the road travelling from place to place, even into the early morning hours. And through it all, my brother kept driving. He did not allow any obstacle to get in the way of our adventure. This experience taught me something about a father’s care for his child. You see, my brother made sure to keep checking in with his son as we went. And this continued even when he had fallen asleep in the back seat. He showed a persistent care. 

Our Lord cares for us every second of the day. He wants to give us what we need, and he wants to keep us safe. We unfortunately seem drawn towards things that are dangerous. And so our Lord shows his concern for us today in the Gospel. He says, “I am checking up on you, please respond.” Each time that we pray the Our Father, it is a response to the loving concern of God for us. 

When Jesus’ disciples saw him praying, they were so impressed, they asked him to show them to pray like that. He was praying in a completely different way that they had never seen before. He was living as a Son, in relationship with the Father. How are we living as God’s children in relationship with Him? I sometimes find myself praying without being focused on what I am doing or saying. And in those times, I don’t think I am living as a model for how you should pray. At other times, I choose to give God the best part of my day. He gets my full attention, and the words are just an extension of the response of my heart to Him.  I would like to invite each one of us here to reflect on the quality of our prayer. Are we giving God the best part of ourselves? Is prayer an honest reflection of our hearts responding to the concern of our heavenly Father? 

Finally, we see the image of the neighbor knocking on the door in the middle of the night. That is a relatable image for anyone who has ever worked on call. But even if you have not, God still wants you to come knocking. He doesn’t want you to wait to ask for what you need or respond to his call in the morning. He is waiting at every moment. Be persistent, and be honest so that prayer may truly be a loving response to God who loves you.

Recientemente me fui de viaje con mi hermano y mi sobrino. Durante ese viaje, pasamos muchas horas en la carretera viajando de un lugar a otro, incluso en las primeras horas de la mañana. Y a pesar de todo, mi hermano siguió conduciendo. No permitió que ningún obstáculo se interpusiera en el camino de nuestra aventura. Esta experiencia me enseñó algo sobre el cuidado de un padre por su hijo. Verá, mi hermano se aseguró de seguir controlando a su hijo a medida que avanzábamos. Y esto continuó incluso cuando se había quedado dormido en el asiento trasero. Mostró un cuidado persistente.

Nuestro Señor cuida de nosotros cada segundo del día. Quiere darnos lo que necesitamos y quiere mantenernos a salvo. Desafortunadamente, parecemos atraídos por cosas que son peligrosas. Y así nuestro Señor muestra su preocupación por nosotros hoy en el Evangelio. Él dice: “Te estoy controlando, por favor responde”. Cada vez que rezamos el Padre Nuestro, es una respuesta a la preocupación amorosa de Dios por nosotros.

Cuando los discípulos de Jesús lo vieron orar, quedaron tan impresionados que le pidieron que les mostrara orar así. Estaba orando de una manera completamente diferente que nunca antes habían visto. Vivía como un Hijo, en relación con el Padre. ¿Cómo estamos viviendo como hijos de Dios en relación con Él? A veces me encuentro orando sin concentrarme en lo que estoy haciendo o diciendo. Y en esos momentos, no creo que esté viviendo como un modelo de cómo debes orar. En otras ocasiones, elijo darle a Dios la mejor parte de mi día. Él recibe toda mi atención, y las palabras son solo una extensión de la respuesta de mi corazón hacia Él.  Me gustaría invitar a cada uno de nosotros aquí a reflexionar sobre la calidad de nuestra oración. ¿Le estamos dando a Dios la mejor parte de nosotros mismos? ¿Es la oración un reflejo honesto de nuestros corazones que responden a la preocupación de nuestro Padre celestial?

Finalmente, vemos la imagen del vecino llamando a la puerta en medio de la noche. Esa es una imagen identificable para cualquiera que haya trabajado alguna vez de guardia. Pero incluso si no lo has hecho, Dios todavía quiere que llames a la puerta. Él no quiere que esperes para pedir lo que necesitas o responder a su llamado por la mañana. Él está esperando en todo momento. Sé persistente y honesto para que la oración sea realmente una respuesta amorosa a Dios que te ama.
