Notice the crazy detail about the merchant who found the pearl of great value. This guy is in the market and he sees this pearl. He goes home, packs up all his stuff, and puts it out for sale cheap and quick. He sells his car, his extra clothes, even his house. Now he only has the clothes on his back, and a bunch of money. Then he goes to this same merchant and spends all of his money on this one pearl. You can’t eat it. You can’t sleep in it. You can’t substitute it for any of those things that he sold. This guy is crazy. And imagine you see him walking down the street wearing the rags that were his clothes and you ask him, “hey are you ok?” And he says, “Oh I’m great, I don’t need anything, I’ve got my pearl here.”

This is the type of Christian that Jesus is calling us to be. Not the one that has both the pearl and everything side by side, but rather, the pearl, which is Christ himself, is the sole possession of a true Christian. I own nothing but Jesus. That means that everything else I think I own, I am just borrowing until the rightful owner comes to get them from me. This is a very scary way to live, but it is true love. Do we truly love the Lord with our whole heart, our whole soul, our whole mind, and our whole strength? Or do we love him and our possessions?

What things are the most valuable in my life right now? What things would cause me pain if I were to lose them? And how valuable is a relationship with Jesus right now? Would I sacrifice everything I own in order to have Him? Ultimately, Jesus does not ask us to not have anything. He asks us to love him more than anything else and thus be ready to let go of anything in order to hold on to Him. Am I ready to hold on to him now?

Fíjate en el detalle loco del comerciante que encontró la perla de gran valor. Este tipo está en el mercado y ve esta perla. Se va a casa, recoge todas sus cosas y las pone a la venta baratas y rápido. Vende su coche, su ropa de repuesto, incluso su casa. Ahora solo tiene la ropa que lleva puesta y un montón de dinero. Luego va a ese mismo comerciante y gasta todo su dinero en esta perla. No puedes comerlo. No puedes dormir con ella. No puedes sustituirlo por ninguna de esas cosas que él vendió. Este tipo está loco. Y te imaginas que lo ves caminando por la calle con los harapos que eran su ropa y le preguntas: “¿Estás bien?” Y él dice: “Oh, estoy genial, no necesito nada, tengo mi perla aquí.”

Este es el tipo de cristiano que Jesús nos llama a ser. No la que tiene tanto la perla como todo uno al lado del otro, sino la perla, que es Cristo mismo, es la única posesión de un verdadero cristiano. No poseo nada más que a Jesús. Eso significa que todo lo demás que creo que poseo, solo lo estoy pidiendo prestado hasta que venga el dueño legítimo a recogérmelo. Es una forma muy aterradora de vivir, pero es amor verdadero. ¿Amamos realmente al Señor con todo nuestro corazón, toda nuestra alma, toda nuestra mente y toda nuestra fuerza? ¿O le amamos a él y a nuestras pertenencias?

¿Qué cosas son más valiosas en mi vida ahora mismo? ¿Qué cosas me causarían dolor si las perdiera? ¿Y qué valor tiene ahora mismo una relación con Jesús? ¿Sacrificaría todo lo que poseo para tenerle? En última instancia, Jesús no nos pide que no tengamos nada. Nos pide que le amemos más que a nada y, por tanto, estemos dispuestos a dejar ir cualquier cosa para aferrarnos a Él. ¿Estoy lista para aferrarme a él ahora?
