Jesus tells us that he desires to set the world on fire. For a Jewish person hearing him speak, they would immediately think of the end of the world. You see, they were familiar with the story of Noah and the great flood. And how at the end of the flood, God promised to never destroy the earth by a flood again. And so the Jewish tradition taught that the end of the world would give with fire. And Jesus continues by saying he wishes that the world was already blazing.

Now before we get caught up in thinking of the end times, we can see how God has already set the world on fire. I think perhaps there are many great preachers in Sweetwater and Roscoe. Men and women who are given a gift from God to stand up and proclaim something true and beautiful about Jesus. I don’t consider myself one of them. But I do consider what we do here in this Church to be greater than any words ever proclaimed from a pulpit. When we hear a preacher proclaim a message of repentance, of mercy, of love, many times it can touch your heart. It can make you laugh, or cry. How does it affect us to be here at Church today?

The fire that Christ spoke about is the fire of the Holy Spirit. The fire that is lit at our Baptism and strengthened at our Confirmation. Perhaps we don’t feel a deep emotion in our hearts right now. It is possible that we could participate in this entire Mass and not have a strong emotion enter our hearts. But that does not change the reality of what is taking place. You see, the eternal God is choosing to become present on this altar, so that we may eat his flesh and drink his blood.

When it comes to the truth of the Eucharist, many people refuse to accept this truth. It is easier to believe that it is just a symbol. That, because my heart isn’t overflowing with emotion, nothing is happening. And so, some people seek other churches where they can feel something. It is based on the belief, “if I don’t feel it, the fire isn’t burning.” And ultimately, this leads to division in the family. All of us know the pain of a member of our family who has stopped coming to Church. The division in married couples, between children and parents, and any other members of our family.

Jesus has come to set fire upon the earth, and the result of that fire is that some people will choose to reject him. I pray for those who no longer come to Mass. I pray that they may encounter the fire of God’s love for them and may return to the sacraments. I pray also that we may encounter the fire of God today, whether we feel it or not, and be transformed by receiving Holy Communion.

Jesús nos dice que desea incendiar el mundo. Para una persona judía que lo escuchara hablar, inmediatamente pensaría en el fin del mundo. Verás, estaban familiarizados con la historia de Noé y el gran diluvio. Y cómo al final del diluvio, Dios prometió no volver a destruir la tierra con un diluvio. Y así, la tradición judía enseñaba que el fin del mundo daría con fuego. Y Jesús continúa diciendo que desearía que el mundo ya estuviera ardiendo.

Ahora, antes de que nos quedemos atrapados pensando en el fin de los tiempos, podemos ver cómo Dios ya ha incendiado el mundo. Creo que tal vez hay muchos grandes predicadores en Sweetwater y Roscoe. Hombres y mujeres a quienes Dios les ha dado un regalo para ponerse de pie y proclamar algo verdadero y hermoso sobre Jesús. No me considero uno de ellos. Pero sí considero que lo que hacemos aquí en esta Iglesia es más grande que cualquier palabra que se haya proclamado desde un púlpito. Cuando escuchamos a un predicador proclamar un mensaje de arrepentimiento, de misericordia, de amor, muchas veces puede tocar tu corazón. Puede hacerte reír o llorar. ¿Cómo nos afecta estar aquí en la Iglesia hoy?

El fuego del que Cristo habló es el fuego del Espíritu Santo. El fuego que se enciende en nuestro Bautismo y se fortalece en nuestra Confirmación. Tal vez no sentimos una emoción profunda en nuestros corazones en este momento. Es posible que podamos participar en toda esta Misa y que no entre una emoción fuerte en nuestros corazones. Pero eso no cambia la realidad de lo que está ocurriendo. Verás, el Dios eterno está eligiendo estar presente en este altar, para que podamos comer su carne y beber su sangre.

Cuando se trata de la verdad de la Eucaristía, muchas personas se niegan a aceptar esta verdad. Es más fácil creer que es solo un símbolo. Que, debido a que mi corazón no está rebosante de emoción, no está pasando nada. Y así, algunas personas buscan otras iglesias donde puedan sentir algo. Se basa en la creencia: “si no lo siento, el fuego no está ardiendo”. Y, en última instancia, esto conduce a la división en la familia. Todos conocemos el dolor de un miembro de nuestra familia que ha dejado de venir a la Iglesia. La división en parejas casadas, entre hijos y padres, y cualquier otro miembro de nuestra familia.

Jesús ha venido a prender fuego sobre la tierra, y el resultado de ese fuego es que algunas personas optarán por rechazarlo. Rezo por los que ya no vienen a misa. Rezo para que puedan encontrar el fuego del amor de Dios por ellos y puedan volver a los sacramentos. También rezo para que podamos encontrar el fuego de Dios hoy, lo sintamos o no, y ser transformados al recibir la Sagrada Comunión.
