20th Sunday of Ordinary Time (Year A)

English

Above all, trust in the slow work of God. I think I desire good things. I want the Church to flourish. I want there to be new growth, more members, more activities. I hope for bigger outreach in our community. As I reflect on what I want, there is an important step which is so easy to overlook. When I trust in God’s timing my inner peace remains, and when I look at the present moment, I easily get discouraged. It is the same feeling when I start running a marathon and I have been running for over an hour. The excitement is gone, and the realization that I have so much further to go starts to weigh me down. Or maybe that’s just all the good food I ate beforehand.

In the Gospel, Jesus teaches the woman to be patient in her prayer. She asks him once, twice, and finally a third time. Then he finally grants her request. This is because he wants to see her trusting in him patiently. How many of us would have quit after the first rejection? Jesus didn’t respond to me, so I guess I will go home. Then Jesus outright tells her no, but she still doesn’t quit. Again, that is something incredible. Yet when I ask Jesus for something and he doesn’t answer me, that’s all it takes for me to give up. That might be the most challenging thing our Lord asks us to do. To keep praying when we get no response, and even when we get a response that we did not want.

I want to shift gears to something that we as a community must pray for. That we may be united in our love for Christ and one another. Our love for Jesus brings us to the Church on Sunday to hear him speak to us, and to receive his Body and Blood. And every single person here, whether you know them, or like them, is here because they love Jesus. And that is the key. Do I recognize the love of Christ in the person sitting next to me or behind me? And then, do I love my brothers and sisters around me? I cannot declare that I love God while not loving those around me. The Apostle John says if we do that, we are liars and the love of God is not in us. And so let us pray for unity in our Church. Unity in the love of God and our neighbor. And let us trust in God’s timing to answer our prayers.
