About 2 months ago, the Nintendo Switch 2 was released. And it was a mad rush for everyone who wanted to get one. I stayed up until midnight refreshing the page over and over hoping to get the chance to click the buy button. I read stories of people overcrowding the stores, and even online stores cancelling orders after they had been placed because they realized they had sold more than they had in stock.

Jesus gives us an image similar to this when it comes to entering heaven. And yet for some reason, we think that we are the ones who will get in without any trouble. This attitude is a problem because it is ignoring the words of Jesus. He says, you will knock on the door and tell Him that you ate and drank with him and listened to him, and he will respond, “depart from me you doers of iniquity.” This is the key phrase for us to recognize. We cannot expect to enter heaven if we treat sin as an ordinary part of our lives.

The definition of sin is an offense against God, a failure in genuine love for God and neighbor caused by a perverse attachment to certain goods. With that definition, Jesus’ words make more sense. Because we become more attached to something other than God, we break our communion with God. We choose something over our Creator. We cannot serve God and created things.

And we might respond, well, I serve God first. That needs to proven by the way we live our lives. I will share an example in my own life where I am being invited to serve God first. When I first wake up in the morning, what is the first thing that I reach for? I would like to say my rosary. My bible. But sadly, more often than not, it is my phone.

The people who ended up getting the Nintendo Switch 2 were the ones who camped outside the store before it opened. The ones who were at their computers before everyone else. It was not the ones who just sat back and said they would buy it the next day. When it comes to our salvation, we cannot afford to wait another day.

When it comes to the Sacrament of Confession, we look at our sins we are guilty of, take responsibility for them, and open ourselves up to God and communion with the Church to make a new future possible. There is an interior fight going on every time we consider going to Confession. We start to ask ourselves questions like, “Do I really have to go? Were my sins really that bad? What if the priest thinks I’m a terrible person?” To decide to go, even though you would rather not. To make yourself get up, get to Church early, and walk into that Confessional, you are walking on the path towards heaven. Many will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough. Pray for the grace to go anyway, pray for those who are afraid to go or have not gone for a long time, so that God’s healing mercy may transform our lives.

Hace aproximadamente 2 meses, se lanzó el Nintendo Switch 2. Y fue una carrera loca para todos los que querían obtener uno. Me quedé despierto hasta la medianoche actualizando la página una y otra vez con la esperanza de tener la oportunidad de hacer clic en el botón de compra. Leí historias de personas que abarrotaban las tiendas, e incluso tiendas en línea que cancelaban pedidos después de haberlos realizado porque se dieron cuenta de que habían vendido más de lo que tenían en stock.

Jesús nos da una imagen similar a esta cuando se trata de entrar al cielo. Y, sin embargo, por alguna razón, pensamos que somos nosotros los que entraremos sin ningún problema. Esta actitud es un problema porque está ignorando las palabras de Jesús. Él dice, llamarás a la puerta y le dirás que comiste y bebiste con él y lo escuchaste, y él responderá: “Apártense de mí, hacedores de iniquidad”. Esta es la frase clave que debemos reconocer. No podemos esperar entrar al cielo si tratamos el pecado como una parte ordinaria de nuestras vidas.

La definición de pecado es una ofensa contra Dios, una falta de amor genuino por Dios y por el prójimo causada por un apego perverso a ciertos bienes. Con esa definición, las palabras de Jesús tienen más sentido. Debido a que nos apegamos más a algo que no es Dios, rompemos nuestra comunión con Dios. Elegimos algo por encima de nuestro Creador. No podemos servir a Dios y a las cosas creadas.

Y podríamos responder, bueno, sirvo a Dios primero. Eso debe demostrarse por la forma en que vivimos nuestras vidas. Compartiré un ejemplo en mi propia vida en el que se me invita a servir a Dios primero. Cuando me despierto por la mañana, ¿qué es lo primero que busco? Me gustaría rezar mi rosario. Mi biblia. Pero, lamentablemente, la mayoría de las veces, es mi teléfono.

Las personas que terminaron comprando el Nintendo Switch 2 fueron las que acamparon afuera de la tienda antes de que abriera. Los que estaban en sus computadoras antes que los demás. No fueron los que simplemente se sentaron y dijeron que lo comprarían al día siguiente. Cuando se trata de nuestra salvación, no podemos darnos el lujo de esperar otro día.

Cuando se trata del Sacramento de la Confesión, miramos nuestros pecados de los que somos culpables, asumimos la responsabilidad de ellos y nos abrimos a Dios y a la comunión con la Iglesia para hacer posible un nuevo futuro. Hay una lucha interior cada vez que consideramos ir a confesarnos. Comenzamos a hacernos preguntas como: “¿Realmente tengo que irme? ¿Fueron mis pecados realmente tan malos? ¿Qué pasa si el sacerdote piensa que soy una persona terrible?” Decidir ir, aunque prefieras no hacerlo. Para levantarse, llegar temprano a la iglesia y entrar en ese confesionario, está caminando por el camino hacia el cielo. Muchos intentarán entrar, pero no serán lo suficientemente fuertes. Oren por la gracia de ir de todos modos, oren por aquellos que tienen miedo de ir o no han ido por mucho tiempo, para que la misericordia sanadora de Dios pueda transformar nuestras vidas.
