Jesus speaks to the leaders of the people. The same leaders who rejected John the Baptist while many sinners had listened to him and repented. You see, John had been preaching a baptism of repentance. Acknowledge your sins before God, and ask him to have mercy on you. The scribes and pharisees listened to John, but they refused to participate. They would not go into the water or acknowledge their sins. Maybe they thought that they didn’t have any sins worth acknowledging. Or maybe they were too ashamed on what they had done and could not bear having to admit it. But the tax collectors and other sinners were open to a change of heart. It was a matter of humility. We can fall into the camp of the leaders of the people very easily when we refuse to recognize our sins and ask God for forgiveness.

When I was a kid, I remember my mom asking me to take some meat from the freezer so it would thaw out for dinner. She had to go out and run errands for several hours. I said sure, no problem. Well, I was playing a video game and I forgot. I remembered as soon as she got home. But ultimately, that was too late to make any difference. I had said yes, but my actions did not follow through, and we did not get to eat that meat for dinner.

How much more important of an action is it for us to turn back to God and tell him that we are sorry? The Lord says in book of the prophet Ezekiel, “I desire not the death of the sinner but his conversion.” The Lord is asking us to humbly turn away from our sins. At the beginning of Mass, we are all invited to acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries. I want to invite each one of us to take that moment seriously. This is not just a matter of, “it’s the next thing we do in Mass.” This is a matter of us having the same heart as Christ, so that we may because one with Him in the Word and the Eucharist.

He emptied himself. He did not hold on to pride or his own self-importance. Rather, he laid down his life. When we acknowledge our sins, most especially in Confession, we empty ourselves. We put aside the image that I am good and perfect, and allow the Lord to shape us into someone truly good by his grace rather than our works. The only thing I am really good at is sinning. But if I could get good at 1 more thing, I want to get good at repenting. The act of repenting with John the Baptist wasn’t a 1-time thing. Those people who repented then walked with Jesus and continued that journey of turning away from their sins. And so tomorrow I challenge you. When you get up in the morning, pray what we pray at the beginning of Mass. Brothers and sisters, let me acknowledge my sins, and so prepare myself to celebrate the sacred mysteries.

Jesús habla a los líderes del pueblo. Los mismos líderes que rechazaron a Juan el Bautista mientras muchos pecadores le habían escuchado y se habían arrepentido. Verás, Juan había estado predicando un bautismo de arrepentimiento. Reconoce tus pecados ante Dios y pídele que tenga misericordia de ti. Los escribas y fariseos escucharon a Juan, pero se negaron a participar. No entraron en el agua ni reconocieron sus pecados. Quizá pensaron que no tenían pecados dignos de reconocimiento. O tal vez estaban demasiado avergonzados de lo que habían hecho y no podían soportar tener que admitirlo. Pero los recaudadores de impuestos y otros pecadores estaban abiertos a un cambio de corazón. Era una cuestión de humildad. Podemos caer fácilmente en el bando de los líderes del pueblo cuando nos negamos a reconocer nuestros pecados y pedimos perdón a Dios.

Cuando era niño, recuerdo que mi madre me pedía que sacara algo de carne del congelador para que se descongelara para la cena. Tuvo que salir a hacer recados durante varias horas. Le dije que sí, ningún problema. Bueno, estaba jugando a un videojuego y se me olvidó. Me acordé en cuanto llegó a casa. Pero al final, eso ya era demasiado tarde para cambiar nada. Dije que sí, pero mis acciones no se cumplieron y no pudimos comer esa carne para cenar.

¿Qué tan importante es para nosotros volver a Dios y decirle que lo lamentamos? El Señor dice en el libro del profeta Ezequiel: “No deseo la muerte del pecador, sino su conversión.” El Señor nos pide que humildemente nos alejemos de nuestros pecados. Al comienzo de la Misa, todos estamos invitados a reconocer nuestros pecados y así prepararnos para celebrar los sagrados misterios. Quiero invitar a cada uno de nosotros a tomar ese momento en serio. Esto no es solo cuestión de, “es lo siguiente que hagamos en la Misa.” Esto es cuestión de que tengamos el mismo corazón que Cristo, para que podamos ser uno con Él en la Palabra y en la Eucaristía.

Se vació a sí mismo. No se aferró al orgullo ni a su propia importancia. Más bien, entregó su vida. Cuando reconocemos nuestros pecados, especialmente en la confesión, nos vaciamos. Dejamos a un lado la imagen de que soy bueno y perfecto, y permitimos que el Señor nos forme en alguien verdaderamente bueno por su gracia y no por nuestras obras. Lo único en lo que realmente soy bueno es en pecar. Pero si pudiera ser bueno en una cosa más, quiero aprender a arrepentirme. El acto de arrepentirse con Juan el Bautista no fue algo de una sola vez. Aquellas personas que se arrepintieron caminaron con Jesús y continuaron ese camino de alejarse de sus pecados. Así que mañana os desafío. Cuando os levantéis por la mañana, rezad lo que rezamos al comienzo de la misa. Hermanos y hermanas, permitidme reconocer mis pecados y así prepararme para celebrar los sagrados misterios.
