For the Jewish people, the Temple was the center of their life. The Temple represented 3 things. 1. The dwelling place of God. The Jews would walk by the Temple, and recognize that magnificent place as the place where the God who created everything was dwelling among his people. 2. The sole place of worship. There was no concept of worshipping God in your backyard, or in a park or anywhere else. If you were going to worship God, it had to happen in the Temple. 3. The place which symbolized all of creation. Every single thing in the Temple represented a part of creation, and so to enter into the Temple was to be surrounded by water, lights, a veil, behind which was heaven which we cannot yet see.

What is the center of our lives? I think the classic Christian answer is, “Jesus.” And what a beautiful answer that is. But that answer has to be backed up with evidence. Why should I believe you when you tell me that Jesus is the center of your life? It cannot be a feeling you have in your heart. Feelings come and go. What is the objective truth that makes Jesus truly at the center of your life?

For me, the answer is the Eucharist. I come to Mass to worship Jesus and be united with him by receiving his Body and Blood. I sit down before him in adoration because he is the one who loves me and has called me to be with him. I cannot survive without the Eucharist. There is a famous saint named St. Catherine of Siena. She made her first Holy Communion when she was 8 years old, and she ate nothing else for the rest of her life until she died at the age of 33. Think of the faith! At only 8 years old, she was already so in love with Jesus that nothing else mattered. And that continued for 25 years. Jesus is sufficient.

Jesus then tells his disciples that the Temple is going to be destroyed! They are going to lose the center of their lives. The dwelling place of God. The sole place of worship. The place which represents all of creation. This is terrifying for his disciples. And it only seems to get worse. But Jesus tells us that in the midst of all of these terrible things happening, He will be with us to deliver us. By your perseverance, you will secure your lives. So now is the time to answer that key question. What is the center of my life? Am I holding fast to Jesus? Is receiving the Eucharist the most important thing in my life?

Each person has a unique situation in their journey, so I encourage everyone to seek the Lord. If some sin is preventing you from receiving Holy Communion, come and visit with me. If the shame of past sins are keeping you from receiving Holy Communion, come and find healing in the sacrament of Confession. And know that I am praying for every person in this Church, and every person not present, that Jesus may be the center of our lives.

Para el pueblo judío, el Templo era el centro de su vida. El Templo representaba 3 cosas. 1. La morada de Dios. Los judíos pasaban por el Templo y reconocían ese magnífico lugar como el lugar donde el Dios que creó todo moraba entre su pueblo. 2. El único lugar de culto. No existía el concepto de adorar a Dios en su patio trasero, o en un parque o en cualquier otro lugar. Si ibas a adorar a Dios, tenía que suceder en el Templo. 3. El lugar que simbolizaba toda la creación. Cada cosa en el Templo representaba una parte de la creación, por lo que entrar en el Templo era estar rodeado de agua, luces, un velo, detrás del cual estaba el cielo que aún no podemos ver.

¿Cuál es el centro de nuestras vidas? Creo que la respuesta cristiana clásica es: “Jesús”. Y qué hermosa respuesta es esa. Pero esa respuesta tiene que estar respaldada con evidencia. ¿Por qué debería creerte cuando me dices que Jesús es el centro de tu vida? No puede ser un sentimiento que tengas en tu corazón. Los sentimientos van y vienen. ¿Cuál es la verdad objetiva que hace que Jesús esté realmente en el centro de tu vida?

Para mí, la respuesta es la Eucaristía. Vengo a Misa para adorar a Jesús y unirme a él al recibir su Cuerpo y Sangre. Me siento ante él en adoración porque él es quien me ama y me ha llamado a estar con él. No puedo sobrevivir sin la Eucaristía. Hay una famosa santa llamada Santa Catalina de Siena. Hizo su primera comunión cuando tenía 8 años y no comió nada más por el resto de su vida hasta que murió a la edad de 33 años. ¡Piensa en la fe! Con solo 8 años, ya estaba tan enamorada de Jesús que nada más importaba. Y eso continuó durante 25 años. Jesús es suficiente.

¡Jesús luego les dice a sus discípulos que el Templo va a ser destruido! Van a perder el centro de sus vidas. La morada de Dios. El único lugar de culto. El lugar que representa toda la creación. Esto es aterrador para sus discípulos. Y solo parece empeorar. Pero Jesús nos dice que en medio de todas estas cosas terribles que suceden, Él estará con nosotros para liberarnos. Con su perseverancia, asegurarán sus vidas. Así que ahora es el momento de responder a esa pregunta clave. ¿Cuál es el centro de mi vida? ¿Me estoy aferrando a Jesús? ¿Recibir la Eucaristía es lo más importante en mi vida?

Cada persona tiene una situación única en su viaje, por lo que animo a todos a buscar al Señor. Si algún pecado te impide recibir la Sagrada Comunión, ven a visitarme. Si la vergüenza de los pecados pasados te impide recibir la Sagrada Comunión, ven y encuentra la curación en el sacramento de la Confesión. Y sepan que estoy orando por cada persona en esta Iglesia, y por cada persona que no está presente, para que Jesús sea el centro de nuestras vidas.
