Jesus travels north to Capernaum preaches that the kingdom of God is at hand and calls the first disciples. Matthew notes that Jesus is travelling to the land of Zebulun and Naphtali. This is the places where the 12 tribes of Israel first fell apart. Those 2 tribes were the first to be conquered and sent into exile. And the prophecy from Isaiah is that the people in darkness have seen a great light because a child is born to us, the mighty God and prince of peace.

Jesus comes and begins to reestablish the kingdom that was divided and lost because of sin. He does not immediately go out and look for the people who have been exiled. Rather he gathers 12 apostles around him. Then he sends them out to go and become fishers to men. To gather everyone who has been exiled from relationship with God and reunite them in his glorious kingdom.

That glorious kingdom is of course not here on this earth, but in heaven. Now, Jesus established a Church in calling the twelve apostles. He set up a structured organization that will work to achieve his purpose. He could have done it by himself, but he chose to allow us to become coworkers with him in his mission of bringing all the exiled people who have been living in darkness and the shadow of death into the light of his love.

The Church is a community created and called by God to evangelize and bring all people into salvation. We proclaim God’s word most fully when we gather as a community for worship, especially in the celebration of the Eucharist. This gives witness that we are dependent on God, and God is actively working to save us.

Within the Church, God has specific calls for people. Each person works in different places, has different responsibilities and friends. And each one of us must respond to this call to preach the Gospel by the way we live around our friends and coworkers, and by the way that we attend Church. Within the Church, there is also the need for more young men to follow the call of Peter and Andrew, James, and John. To leave their nets and boats behind, and go and follow Jesus into the priesthood. We rejoice in the fact that Jesus makes himself present to us each Sunday in the Eucharist. That Confession, Anointing of the Sick, Baptism, Confirmation, Marriage are available to us. This is God taking care of us, but it is also a result of a young man saying yes to God. I cannot do it alone. The Lord knows we need more priests. Christ has come to establish his kingdom, to call us out of darkness into the kingdom of his light. Let us pray that we may respond to his call and truly be co-workers in his vineyard.

Jesús viaja hacia el norte, a Cafarnaúm, predica que el reino de Dios está cerca y llama a los primeros discípulos. Mateo señala que Jesús viaja a la tierra de Zabulón y Naftali. Estos son los lugares donde las 12 tribus de Israel se desmoronaron por primera vez. Esas dos tribus fueron las primeras en ser conquistadas y enviadas al exilio. Y la profecía de Isaías dice que el pueblo en las tinieblas ha visto una gran luz porque nos ha nacido un niño, el poderoso Dios y príncipe de la paz.

Jesús llega y comienza a restablecer el reino que fue dividido y perdido por el pecado. No sale inmediatamente a buscar a las personas que han sido exiliadas. Más bien, reúne a 12 apóstoles a su alrededor. Luego los envía a convertirse en pescadores de hombres. Reunir a todos los que han sido exiliados de la relación con Dios y reunirlos en su glorioso reino.

La Iglesia es una comunidad creada y llamada por Dios para evangelizar y llevar a todas las personas a la salvación. Proclamamos la palabra de Dios con mayor plenitud cuando nos reunimos como comunidad para adorar, especialmente en la celebración de la Eucaristía. Esto da testimonio de que dependemos de Dios y que Dios está trabajando activamente para salvarnos.

Dentro de la Iglesia, Dios tiene llamados específicos para las personas. Cada persona trabaja en lugares diferentes, tiene responsabilidades y amigos distintos. Y cada uno de nosotros debe responder a este llamado a predicar el Evangelio por la forma en que vivimos con nuestros amigos y compañeros de trabajo, y por la manera en que asistimos a la Iglesia. Dentro de la Iglesia, también es necesario que más jóvenes sigan el llamado de Pedro y Andrés, Santiago y Juan. Dejar atrás sus redes y barcas, y seguir a Jesús al sacerdocio. Nos alegra el hecho de que Jesús se presente ante nosotros cada domingo en la Eucaristía. Que la Confesión, la Unción de los Enfermos, el Bautismo, la Confirmación, el Matrimonio están disponibles para nosotros. Esto es Dios cuidando de nosotros, pero también es el resultado de que un joven haya dicho sí a Dios. No puedo hacerlo solo. El Señor sabe que necesitamos más sacerdotes. Cristo ha venido a establecer su reino, a llamarnos de las tinieblas al reino de su luz. Oremos para responder a su llamado y ser verdaderamente compañeros de trabajo en su viñedo.
