This past week, it seemed like everything was shut down. The roads were unsafe. Many people stayed at home. School was cancelled. And in the midst of all of this, we were left waiting. When can life go back to normal? It’s great to have some time off, but how soon can I get back out safely? This is a good attitude for Christians in regard to living in this world. How soon can I start living according to the kingdom of God rather than the kingdom of this world?

Jesus preaches his key homily in the Beatitudes. And the location he chooses to do it is important. He goes up the mountain like Moses. But instead of bringing the law of God back down the mountain to the people, he brings the people up with him so that they can learn a higher law. We are being taught the commandments and laws of the heavenly kingdom in which Jesus is inviting us to participate.

These 8 beatitudes are a description given to us by Jesus on how to be happy living in his kingdom. Every single person wants to be happy. It is the primary desire of our hearts, and so often we chase after things on this earth to make us happy, but we are left empty and sad. Jesus invites us to live as members of his kingdom so that the desire of our hearts might be fulfilled.

When it comes to wealth and riches, Jesus tells us to be poor in spirit. This does not mean we should have nothing. Rather, this means that we should live in complete dependence on God rather than on ourselves. I am poor and empty when I am separated from God. When it comes to mourning, Jesus invites us to again, put our trust in him to find comfort rather than in worldly things. When it comes to being meek, he invites us to be humble, gentle, and patient. We do not seek to conquer those around us by being right, but rather we remain humble even when others attack us, putting our trust in God rather than on our own strength.

Holiness, Mercy, Purity, and Peace are further fruits of those who live in the kingdom of heaven rather than the kingdom of this world. These are things that we should feel a sense of longing for. How soon can I start living in this kind of way rather than living in the emptiness of separation from God?

Now all of these ways of living are contrary to the image that the world gives us for being happy. In fact, the world promises us that these things are only going to make us more miserable. Our joy is not in this world. Our joy comes from the Lord. All of this is something that we proclaim and believe, but are we living it? Do I live as if I want to be in heaven today? Am I choosing the harder path of humility, gentleness, patience, mercy, and purity over the easy path of what makes me happy right now? I want to invite each one of us to stir up the desire of our hearts for the kingdom of heaven, so that our actions may naturally flow from a heart united to Christ. The snow and ice are gone, and we can go back to our normal routines. But Christ does not call us to a normal routine. He calls us to be saints, choosing him over this world.

La semana pasada, parecía que todo estaba cerrado. Las carreteras eran inseguras. Mucha gente se quedó en casa. Se canceló el colegio. Y en medio de todo esto, nos quedamos esperando. ¿Cuándo puede volver la vida a la normalidad? Es genial tener un tiempo libre, pero ¿cuándo puedo volver a salir sin problemas? Esta es una buena actitud para los cristianos respecto a la vida en este mundo. ¿Cuánto tiempo pronto puedo empezar a vivir según el reino de Dios en lugar del reino de este mundo?

Jesús predica su homilía clave en las Bienaventuranzas. Y el lugar que elija para hacerlo es importante. Sube la montaña como Moisés. Pero en lugar de devolver la ley de Dios a la gente, él eleva a la gente con él para que puedan aprender una ley superior. Nos están enseñando los mandamientos y leyes del reino celestial en los que Jesús nos invita a participar.

Ahora bien, todas estas formas de vida son contrarias a la imagen que el mundo nos da por ser felices. De hecho, el mundo nos promete que estas cosas solo nos harán más miserables. Nuestra alegría no está en este mundo. Nuestra alegría viene del Señor. Todo esto es algo que proclamamos y creemos, pero ¿lo estamos viviendo? ¿Vivo como si quisiera estar en el cielo hoy? ¿Estoy eligiendo el camino más difícil de humildad, ternura, paciencia, misericordia y pureza en lugar del camino fácil de lo que me hace feliz ahora mismo? Quiero invitar a cada uno de nosotros a despertar el deseo de nuestro corazón por el reino de los cielos, para que nuestras acciones fluyan naturalmente de un corazón unido a Cristo. La nieve y el hielo han desaparecido, y podemos volver a nuestras rutinas normales. Pero Cristo no nos llama a una rutina normal. Nos llama a ser santos, eligiéndole a él por encima de este mundo.
