Jesus makes an exclusive claim. I am the gate, and whoever enters through me will be saved. Am I concerned for my salvation? I remember playing different games when I was a kid. I would play baseball, or soccer, or football. And it always mattered if my team won. We of course did not win every game, but that was my biggest concern. When we won, I would feel a sense of joy and excitement. And when we lost, I would feel sad and sometimes I would even blame myself or someone else for not playing as well as we could have. Win or lose were the only 2 options on the table.

I remember one time asking my friend about it after we had lost a game. He told me that he would try harder next time, but it wasn’t that big a deal to win or lose. I couldn’t figure it out. How can he be playing the game and not be devastated when we lose? How can he let it go when this is the most important thing we were fighting for and we didn’t win? Eventually I learned to let it go. I would still try to win, but it would not put me in a bad mood if we lost.

While this is good for sports, this is not good for our salvation. There are 2 options on the table – salvation, and the other place. And there is one way to win. Through Jesus Christ. He tells us that we must enter through him. How? When Peter stood up and proclaimed Jesus Christ to the people, they asked him the same question. What shall we do? And Peter tells them, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

Baptism is our entry way through the gate which is Jesus Christ. By our baptism, we are joined to the family of God. We become adopted sons and daughters of God, and heirs to the heavenly kingdom. Our sins are washed away, and we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Peter continues by telling them that Baptism is for you and your children.

This is an important message for us today. We believe in the power of Jesus Christ. We believe in the importance of Baptism. But we cannot ignore the responsibility of raising our children in the faith. They are given the gift of new life in Christ Jesus as infants. And they must be raised as members of the household of God. How concerned are we about our salvation? Do we bring our kids to Mass each week? Do we pray with them at home each day? Do we give them tools and resources for them to grow in their faith? Religious Education classes are great, but they are not a substitute for the example and discipline lived at home of parents who are concerned for the salvation of their children. So let us allow the words of St. Peter to strike our hearts as we play to win.

Jesús hace una afirmación exclusiva. Yo soy la puerta, y quien entre por mí será salvado. ¿Me preocupa mi salvación? Recuerdo que jugaba a diferentes juegos cuando era niño. Jugaba al béisbol, al fútbol o al fútbol americano. Y siempre importaba si mi equipo ganaba. Por supuesto, no ganamos todos los partidos, pero esa era mi mayor preocupación. Cuando ganábamos, sentía una alegría y emoción. Y cuando perdíamos, me sentía triste y a veces incluso me culpaba a mí mismo o a alguien por no haber jugado tan bien como podríamos. Ganar o perder eran las únicas dos opciones sobre la mesa.

Recuerdo una vez que le pregunté a mi amigo después de que habíamos perdido una partida. Me dijo que la próxima vez se esforzaría más, pero que no era para tanto ganar o perder. No conseguía entenderlo. ¿Cómo puede estar jugando y no estar destrozado cuando perdemos? ¿Cómo puede dejarlo pasar cuando esto es lo más importante por lo que luchábamos y no ganamos? Al final aprendí a dejarlo ir. Seguiría intentando ganar, pero no me pondría de mal humor si perdíamos.

Aunque esto es bueno para el deporte, no es bueno para nuestra salvación. Hay dos opciones sobre la mesa: la salvación y el otro lugar. Y hay una forma de ganar. Por Jesucristo. Nos dice que debemos entrar a través de él. ¿Cómo? Cuando Pedro se levantó y proclamó a Jesucristo al pueblo, le hicieron la misma pregunta. ¿Qué hacemos? Y Pedro les dice: «Arrepientaos y bautizaos cada uno de vosotros, en el nombre de Jesucristo por el perdón de vuestros pecados, y recibiréis el don del Espíritu Santo.»

El bautismo es nuestra puerta de entrada a través de la puerta, que es Jesucristo. Por nuestro bautismo, estamos unidos a la familia de Dios. Nos convertimos en hijos e hijas adoptivos de Dios, y herederos del reino celestial. Nuestros pecados se lavan y recibimos el don del Espíritu Santo. Pedro continúa diciéndoles que el bautismo es para ti y tus hijos.

Este es un mensaje importante para nosotros hoy. Creemos en el poder de Jesucristo. Creemos en la importancia del Bautismo. Pero no podemos ignorar la responsabilidad de criar a nuestros hijos en la fe. Se les concede el don de una nueva vida en Cristo Jesús cuando eran niños. Y deben ser criados como miembros de la casa de Dios. ¿Qué tan preocupados estamos por nuestra salvación? ¿Llevamos a nuestros hijos a misa cada semana? ¿Rezamos con ellos en casa cada día? ¿Les damos herramientas y recursos para que crezcan en su fe? Las clases de Educación Religiosa son estupendas, pero no sustituyen el ejemplo y la disciplina que viven en casa los padres preocupados por la salvación de sus hijos. Así que permitamos que las palabras de San Pedro lleguen a nuestro corazón mientras jugamos para ganar.
