Jesus promises to send help. This is something that is very familiar to me working in the Church. I always need to ask other people for help because I cannot accomplish the work on my own. Each person has a particular set of skills, and together, we are able to accomplish what is impossible for 1 person. I saw it happen when we worked together to get this altar and ambo here in the sanctuary. When we installed the little air conditioners in the CCD classrooms. When we painted the sheds and kitchen. This is an analogy to what the Holy Spirit hopes to accomplish with us.

The task that we have received from our Lord is to obey his commandments. This does not simply mean follow the 10 commandments. It means we will do everything he has told us to go. Eat his flesh, drink his blood. Baptize all nations. Go to Confession. Pray always. Feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, give clothing to the naked. The list of things goes on beyond what I have said, but our Lord does not give us an impossible task. He has given us the gift of the Holy Spirit, which we have received or will receive in the Sacrament of Confirmation.

This past week as I was working on a project, I kept losing tools. Where is the measuring tape? Where is the pencil? Where is the drill? I would use it, and then put it down wherever I was and when I needed it again, I couldn’t remember where I had placed it. The Spirit is our guide. Where are you calling me to serve you Lord? In what way do you want me to serve you today? In the hungry person I encounter in the street. In the Church as I feel a tug on my heart to serve as a priest or deacon. In my family as I am the one who is religious, and so they come to me for spiritual guidance.

Perhaps we may feel like we have misplaced our tools. We know God is calling us, but we just don’t know where to go next. Let us ask the Holy Spirit to guide us. Serving God is not about completing a checkbox or task. It is about living in relationship with God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. He will not leave us orphaned. He will not abandon us even though it seems like we don’t know what to do. The Holy Spirit makes his presence known to us through the gifts – wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, fear of the Lord. The purpose of these gifts is to fight the spiritual battle against the world so that we may transform this world for Christ. If we are fighting in this battle, these gifts are necessary and if we are not fighting, these gifts will not be present in our lives. Come Holy Spirit. Help us to follow Christ.

Jesús promete enviar ayuda. Esto es algo que me resulta muy familiar trabajando en la Iglesia. Siempre necesito pedir ayuda a otras personas porque no puedo hacer el trabajo por mi cuenta. Cada persona tiene un conjunto particular de habilidades y, juntos, somos capaces de lograr lo que es imposible para una sola persona. Lo vi cuando trabajamos juntos para traer este altar y ambón aquí en el santuario. Cuando instalamos los pequeños aires acondicionados en las aulas del CCD. Cuando pintamos los cobertizos y la cocina. Esto es una analogía con lo que el Espíritu Santo espera lograr con nosotros.

La tarea que hemos recibido de nuestro Señor es obedecer sus mandamientos. Esto no significa simplemente seguir los 10 mandamientos. Significa que haremos todo lo que nos ha dicho. Comer su carne, beber su sangre. Bautizad a todas las naciones. Ve a confesar. Reza siempre. Alimenta a los hambrientos, da de beber a los sedientos, da ropa a los desnudos. La lista de cosas va más allá de lo que he dicho, pero nuestro Señor no nos da una tarea imposible. Nos ha dado el don del Espíritu Santo, que hemos recibido o recibiremos en el Sacramento de la Confirmación.

La semana pasada, mientras trabajaba en un proyecto, seguía perdiendo herramientas. ¿Dónde está la cinta métrica? ¿Dónde está el lápiz? ¿Dónde está el taladro? La usaba, luego la dejaba donde estuviera y, cuando la necesitaba de nuevo, no recordaba dónde la había puesto. El Espíritu es nuestra guía. ¿Dónde me llamas para servirte, Señor? ¿De qué manera quieres que te sirva hoy? En la persona hambrienta que encuentro en la calle. En la Iglesia, siento un tirón en el corazón para servir como sacerdote o diácono. En mi familia, ya que soy yo quien es religioso, y por eso acuden a mí en busca de guía espiritual.

Quizá sintamos que hemos perdido nuestras herramientas. Sabemos que Dios nos está llamando, pero simplemente no sabemos a dónde ir a continuación. Pidamos al Espíritu Santo que nos guíe. Servir a Dios no consiste en cumplir una casilla o una tarea. Se trata de vivir en relación con Dios Padre, Dios Hijo y Dios Espíritu Santo. No nos dejará huérfanos. No nos abandonará aunque parezca que no sabemos qué hacer. El Espíritu Santo nos hace sentir su presencia a través de los dones: sabiduría, comprensión, consejo, fortaleza, conocimiento, piedad, temor al Señor. El propósito de estos dones es luchar la batalla espiritual contra el mundo para que podamos transformar este mundo para Cristo. Si estamos luchando en esta batalla, estos dones son necesarios y si no luchamos, estos dones no estarán presentes en nuestras vidas. Ven, Espíritu Santo. Ayúdanos a seguir a Cristo.
