Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your apostles, peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you. You hear this prayer every time you come to Mass. After we have prayed the Our Father, and we hear these words of Jesus. He spoke these words to his disciples before the Last Supper in our Gospel today. And he clarifies them further for us. I don’t give a worldly kind of peace. You will have enough money in your account when you retire. You will pass the test you need. You will get a promotion at work. None of those things are promised.

Rather, he promises to send something even better. The Holy Spirit. When Mother Theresa went to India to serve those who were dying, she did not have a plan. She did not even hear the voice of God guiding her day by day. But she had the strength of God pushing her forward. The spirit of God which led her out into the streets to serve God’s children. The Spirit led her to places I am sure that she never imagined she would go. And now, as a saint, we look to her as a model of someone who was led by the Spirit.

In that upper room, you better believe that the disciples were troubled. Jesus was in the city of Jerusalem, and the scribes and pharisees were trying to kill him. They had heard him declare that he would be handed over and killed. This is a place of uncertainty and doubt. And Jesus breaks through the confusion and promises to send the Holy Spirit to comfort them and guide them. Where do we fall in the story? Are we in a place where we need comfort and peace? Do we have doubts about what might happen next in our own lives? This is good. Because it means that we recognize that we need a savior. We need the Holy Spirit, and without Him, we can do nothing.

If you watch the news, you will hear many stories of violence and sadness. These stories may even affect you as you go throughout the day. But imagine the difference if we were led by the Spirit. The Spirit can change our attitude from despair or frustration to one of humble prayer.

In the Mass, I extend my hands over the bread and wine and ask the Father to send the Holy Spirit over the gifts so that they may be transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ. The bells are rung, and we prepare to see Christ on the altar. But notice the effect of the Holy Spirit. He transforms the ordinary into the supernatural. If we are seeking the gift of peace that Christ has promised, let us allow the Holy Spirit to transform us. When we receive the Body and Blood of Christ in Mass, we are united with the Holy Spirit as well. That transformation of the bread and wine was only the beginning for us as we touch God. Let us allow the gift of the Spirit to change us, to guide us, to comfort us, and ultimately, to give us peace.

Señor Jesucristo, tú dijiste a tu apóstoles: La paz les dejo, mi paz le doy. Escuchas esta oración cada vez que vienes a Misa. Después de haber rezado el Padre Nuestro, y escuchamos estas palabras de Jesús. Él dijo estas palabras a sus discípulos antes de la Última Cena en nuestro Evangelio de hoy. Y nos las aclara aún más. Yo no doy un tipo de paz mundana. Tendrás suficiente dinero en tu cuenta cuando te jubiles. Pasarás la prueba que necesitas. Obtendrás un ascenso en el trabajo. Ninguna de esas cosas está prometida.

Más bien, promete enviar algo aún mejor. El Espíritu Santo. Cuando la Madre Teresa fue a la India para servir a los moribundos, no tenía un plan. Si ves las noticias, escucharás muchas historias de violencia y tristeza. Estas historias pueden incluso afectarte a medida que avanzas a lo largo del día. Pero imagínese la diferencia si fuéramos guiados por el Espíritu. El Espíritu puede cambiar nuestra actitud de desesperación o frustración a una de humilde oración.

En la Misa, extiendo mis manos sobre el pan y el vino y pido al Padre que envíe el Espíritu Santo sobre los dones para que se transformen en el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo. Se tocan las campanas y nos preparamos para ver a Cristo en el altar. Pero note el efecto del Espíritu Santo. Transforma lo ordinario en sobrenatural. Si estamos buscando el don de la paz que Cristo ha prometido, dejemos que el Espíritu Santo nos transforme. Cuando recibimos el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo en la Misa, también nos unimos al Espíritu Santo. Esa transformación del pan y el vino fue solo el comienzo para nosotros cuando tocamos a Dios. Dejemos que el don del Espíritu nos cambie, nos guíe, nos consuele y, en última instancia, nos dé paz.
