Imagine you are stranded on a deserted island. You see a ship off in the distance and you start to yell and wave. Unfortunately, the ship does not notice you, and it continues on its journey without stopping. That feeling in the pit of your stomach is very similar to what the disciples must of have felt as they watched Jesus ascended up on the clouds. After they lost sight of him, they were so shocked that all they could do is keep staring at where Jesus was. He is the Savior. And now He is gone?

What keeps us looking at the sky? One of the strongest answers to this question is the things that make us comfortable. I can get so comfortable in my home, with my family, my friends, my work, the way things are done, that I cannot handle anything new or different. This ultimately prevents us from living out the mission given to the apostles by Jesus.

Jesus told the apostles to go make disciples of all nations. And yet how many times have I been caught staring at the clouds because it is a little too uncomfortable to speak up? How many times have I refused to talk about my religion because it is a sensitive topic and people will judge me?

Jesus did not ascend to heaven to leave us alone. He ascended to raise our humanity to heaven so that we have a place to go. He did not merely conquer death by his resurrection. He has changed our very humanity into something that is united with the glory of God. And we get to receive this gift by the fact that we are his disciples.

A disciple is not someone who receives a participation award. A disciple is someone who is actively living out their relationship with Christ. Not in order to drive people away, but rather to show them the goodness of following Christ. There are plenty of people here in this city who do not go to Church on Sunday. There are also plenty of people who go to other churches. Are we seeking to make disciples of all people? We cannot stay in our lane and stare at the clouds because it is too hard to talk about Jesus. Make the sign of the Cross. Bow your heads at the name of Jesus. Honor the mother of God by praying the Hail Mary. Go to Mass every Sunday and Holy Day. Let our identity as disciples of Jesus be known. He has given us a mission, and we cannot stay still.

Imagina que estás varado en una isla desierta. Ves un barco a lo lejos y empiezas a gritar y saludar. Desgraciadamente, la nave no te detecta y continúa su viaje sin detenerse. Esa sensación en el fondo del estómago es muy similar a la que debieron de sentir los discípulos al ver a Jesús ascender a las nubes. Después de perderle de vista, se quedaron tan impactados que lo único que pudieron hacer fue seguir mirando hacia donde estaba Jesús. Él es el Salvador. ¿Y ahora Él se ha ido?

¿Qué nos mantiene mirando al cielo? Una de las respuestas más sólidas a esta pregunta son las cosas que nos hacen sentir cómodos. Puedo sentirme tan cómodo en casa, con mi familia, mis amigos, mi trabajo, la forma en que se hacen las cosas, que no puedo manejar nada nuevo o diferente. Esto, en última instancia, nos impide vivir la misión que Jesús nos dio a los apóstoles.

Jesús dijo a los apóstoles que fueran a hacer discípulos de todas las naciones. Y sin embargo, ¿cuántas veces me han pillado mirando las nubes porque me resulta demasiado incómodo hablar? ¿Cuántas veces me he negado a hablar de mi religión porque es un tema delicado y la gente me juzga?

Jesús no ascendió al cielo para dejarnos solos. Ascendió para elevar nuestra humanidad al cielo para que tengamos un lugar al que ir. No solo venció a la muerte con su resurrección. Ha transformado nuestra propia humanidad en algo unido con la gloria de Dios. Y recibimos este don por el hecho de que somos sus discípulos.

Un discípulo no es alguien que recibe un premio de participación. Un discípulo es alguien que está viviendo activamente su relación con Cristo. No para alejar a la gente, sino para mostrarles la bondad de seguir a Cristo. Hay mucha gente aquí en esta ciudad que no va a la iglesia los domingos. También hay mucha gente que va a otras iglesias. ¿Buscamos hacer discípulos de todas las personas? No podemos quedarnos en nuestro camino y mirar las nubes porque es demasiado difícil hablar de Jesús. Haz la señal de la Cruz. Inclinad la cabeza ante el nombre de Jesús. Honra a la madre de Dios rezando el Ave María. Ve a misa todos los domingos y días santos. Que se conozca nuestra identidad como discípulos de Jesús. Nos ha dado una misión y no podemos quedarnos quietos.
