We celebrate different moments in the life of Christ. His birth at Christmas. His Baptism. The Last Supper. His Resurrection. And now his Ascencion. Each of these moments have a profound impact on our own journey towards Heaven. At his Baptism, we celebrate the gift of being adopted sons and daughters of God which happened at our own Baptism. At the Last Supper, we celebrate the gift of the Eucharist which Jesus gave us so that he can remain with us always. At the Resurrection we celebrate Christ defeating Satan, sin, and death forever, and opening the gates of heaven for us. But the Ascension is a little more confusing. Isn’t this just that time when Jesus floated up into the clouds. What does that have to do with you and I on our Christian journey?

When I write a letter, I place it in an envelope, put the address on it, place a stamp in the corner, and place it in the mailbox. Each of these steps are required for the letter to go out. If I were to skip any of these steps, the letter would not be sent. Jesus loves us. He transformed bread and wine into his Body and Body so that we may be with him always. He died on the Cross for us so we could be free from our debt of sin. And he rose from the dead so that we too may rise on the last day. All of these steps are the letter that God has written. And today, in the Ascension, he delivers this letter to heaven.

He takes what has happened on earth, the sacrifice of his Body on the Cross, and he brings that sacrifice to heaven so that it is perfected. When we come to Mass each week, we participate in the perfect heavenly sacrifice of Christ on the Cross. It is beautiful to imagine Jesus in heaven as a priest. He wears the vestments of our human nature. He carries the Cross to the altar of Calvary, and offers himself for you and I. This is heavenly worship. We have a mere shadow or weak imitation here in this church.

It is easy to lose focus in Mass. To get distracted by other thoughts or the people around us. So let us imagine the heavenly Mass going on right now. See Jesus, truly offering himself for you and I on this altar. And come forward to unite yourself to him.

Celebramos diferentes momentos en la vida de Cristo. Su nacimiento en Navidad. Su bautismo. La Última Cena. Su resurrección. Y ahora su Ascensión. Cada uno de estos momentos tiene un profundo impacto en nuestro propio viaje hacia el Cielo. En su Bautismo, celebramos el don de ser hijos e hijas adoptivos de Dios que sucedió en nuestro propio Bautismo. En la Última Cena, celebramos el don de la Eucaristía que Jesús nos ha dado para que pueda permanecer siempre con nosotros. En la Resurrección celebramos a Cristo derrotando a Satanás, al pecado y a la muerte para siempre, y abriendo las puertas del cielo para nosotros. Pero la Ascensión es un poco más confusa. ¿No es este precisamente ese momento cuando Jesús flotó hacia las nubes? ¿Qué tiene que ver eso contigo y conmigo en nuestro camino cristiano?

Cuando escribo una carta, la coloco en un sobre, le pongo la dirección, coloco un sello en la esquina y lo coloco en el buzón. Cada uno de estos pasos son necesarios para que la carta se envíe. Si me saltara alguno de estos pasos, la carta no se enviaría. Jesús nos ama. Él transformó el pan y el vino en su Cuerpo y Cuerpo para que podamos estar siempre con él. Él murió en la cruz por nosotros para que pudiéramos ser libres de nuestra deuda de pecado. Y resucitó de entre los muertos para que también nosotros resucitemos en el último día. Todos estos pasos son la carta que Dios ha escrito. Y hoy, en la Ascensión, entrega esta carta al cielo.

Él toma lo que ha sucedido en la tierra, el sacrificio de su Cuerpo en la Cruz, y lleva ese sacrificio al cielo para que sea perfeccionado. Cuando venimos a Misa cada semana, participamos en el perfecto sacrificio celestial de Cristo en la Cruz. Es hermoso imaginar a Jesús en el cielo como sacerdote. Él viste las vestiduras de nuestra naturaleza humana. Él lleva la Cruz al altar del Calvario y se ofrece a sí mismo por ti y por mí. Esta es la adoración celestial. Tenemos una mera sombra o una débil imitación aquí en esta iglesia.

Es fácil perder la concentración en la Misa. Distraernos con otros pensamientos o con las personas que nos rodean. Así que imaginemos la Misa celestial que se está llevando a cabo ahora mismo. Mira a Jesús, ofreciéndose verdaderamente a sí mismo por ti y por mí en este altar. Y acércate a unirte a él.
