To pray the Hail Mary, we begin by saying “Hail Mary, Full of Grace, the Lord is with you.” These words of the angel Gabriel reveal a profound truth about the mother of God, and about God’s desire for us. First, we see the truth that Our Lady is not ordinary. She is the Temple of God by the fact that she bore God in her womb. The Temple of God is the place where God dwells with his people. In the Old Testament, this temple was the Ark of the Covenant. Then King Solomon built a grand temple, and the presence of God filled that holy place.

God dwelt with his people in the Ark of the Covenant in the Old Testament, and also in grand Temple built by Solomon, but the people chose to drive him away. They chose to worship other gods. To disobey the commands of the Lord and do what they wanted. For that reason, the Ark of the Covenant was lost, and the Spirit of God left the Temple, and it was destroyed.

Mary is the new Temple, the place where God dwells and she remained faithful to the commands of the Lord. She was given a special grace whereby she preserved from Original Sin from her birth, and she maintained the state of Grace her entire life. She is the Living Temple that God desires each one of us to become. Now the Jews did not worship the Temple. No, they worshipped God who dwelt in the Temple. And it is the same for us. We honor the Virgin Mary, and we worship God who dwelt within her.

Now the second part is about God’s desire for us. He desires that we may be completely transformed by the grace that he pours out on us. Not that we become slightly better people. But that even our bodies become a sign to this world of how much he loves us. There are many saints whose bodies were found incorrupt after their death. Often there is a sweet smell, like flowers or incense coming from their bodies. This is just the beginning of how God wants to transform us. The goal is, put simply, to be like the Virgin Mary. To be full of grace, so that we are temples of God. And so we pray that we may see heaven as our final goal, and may come to share her glory.

Para rezar el Ave María, comenzamos diciendo: “Ave María, llena eres de gracia, el Señor está contigo”. Estas palabras del ángel Gabriel revelan una profunda verdad sobre la madre de Dios y sobre el deseo de Dios para nosotros. Primero, vemos la verdad de que Nuestra Señora no es ordinaria. Ella es el Templo de Dios por el hecho de que llevó a Dios en su vientre. El Templo de Dios es el lugar donde Dios habita con su pueblo. En el Antiguo Testamento, este templo era el Arca de la Alianza. Entonces el rey Salomón construyó un gran templo, y la presencia de Dios llenó ese lugar santo.

Y es lo mismo para nosotros. Honramos a la Virgen María y adoramos a Dios que habitó en ella.

Ahora, la segunda parte es sobre el deseo de Dios para nosotros. Él desea que podamos ser completamente transformados por la gracia que derrama sobre nosotros. No es que nos convirtamos en personas un poco mejores. Pero que incluso nuestros cuerpos se conviertan en una señal para este mundo de cuánto nos ama.
