There are 2 key signs to pay attention to in the Gospel. Jesus travelled to the Jordan River to be baptized by John. This is a very important detail. The Jordan River is not just a regular river that happens to be nearby. This is the same river that the chosen people in the book of exodus crossed over into the promised land. They wandered in the desert for 40 years, and then finally they crossed the Jordan river, which was parted like the red sea so they could walk on dry ground into the promised land. For Jesus to go to the Jordan river, we know something is going to take place that has to do with leaving the desert and entering the promised land.

He enters the water, and the next thing you see is the Holy Spirit descending on him like a dove. This is another connection with what God did in the Old Testament. After Noah was on the ark for 40 days and nights, he sent out the birds, and the bird who returned with the olive branch was the dove. This was a sign of the restoration of creation. Creation has been restored and there is now new life. When we are baptized in the waters that are made holy by Christ, we not only cross the waters towards the promised land, but we also are made into a new creation.

The voice of the Father proclaiming that, “this is my beloved son with whom I am well pleased,” over Jesus is the same thing that is the Father proclaims to us at our Baptism. We are transformed into a new creation, beloved sons and daughters of God. Heaven is open for us at our Baptism because of what Christ did for us. And yet we can lose heaven after our baptism. The waters are poured over us, and we receive the Holy Spirit. Are we now living that new identity?

When I first became a priest, I remember being confused when someone called me “father.” I think I looked around for the priest that the person was talking to! Now it is much more natural, and more than just a word, it is a constant reminder of how I am called to live and act. I am grateful when you allow me to be your spiritual father. We are called to be sons and daughters of God in our baptism. Are we living as his sons and daughters?

Baptism is the normal way by which Christ begins the work of saving us. That is why the church teaches that we must baptize babies as soon as possible. Let the work of becoming a new creation begin as soon as possible. And do not stop allowing the grace of Baptism to transform us. God pours out this grace onto our souls over and over again so that we may grow as seeds that are watered. That is one of the reasons we use holy water to sign ourselves with the cross when we enter the church. We pray that God may continue to pour out the grace of baptism into our souls so that we may continue to be transformed into a new creation as we journey towards heaven.

Hay dos señales clave a las que hay que prestar atención en el Evangelio. Jesús viajó al río Jordán para ser bautizado por Juan. Este es un detalle muy importante. El río Jordan no es simplemente un río común que esté cerca. Este es el mismo río que el pueblo elegido en el libro del Éxodo cruzó hacia la tierra prometida. Vagaron por el desierto durante 40 años, y finalmente cruzaron el río Jordán, que estaba separado como el mar Rojo para poder caminar sobre tierra firme hacia la tierra prometida. Para que Jesús vaya al río Jordán, sabemos que algo va a suceder relacionado con dejar el desierto y entrar en la tierra prometida.

La voz del Padre proclamando que “este es mi amado Hijo con quien estoy bien complacido” sobre Jesús es lo mismo que el Padre nos proclama en nuestro Bautismo. Nos transformamos en una nueva creación, amados hijos e hijas de Dios. El cielo está abierto para nosotros en nuestro Bautismo por lo que Cristo hizo por nosotros. Y sin embargo podemos perder el cielo después de nuestro bautismo. Las aguas se derraman sobre nosotros y recibimos el Espíritu Santo. ¿Estamos viviendo ahora esa nueva identidad?

Cuando me hice sacerdote, recuerdo que me confundió cuando alguien me llamó “padre”. ¡Creo que busqué al sacerdote con el que hablaba la persona! Ahora es mucho más natural, y más que una palabra, es un recordatorio constante de cómo estoy llamado a vivir y actuar. Estoy agradecido cuando me permites ser tu padre espiritual. Estamos llamados a ser hijos e hijas de Dios en nuestro bautismo. ¿Vivimos como sus hijos e hijas?

El bautismo es la forma habitual en que Cristo comienza la obra de salvarnos. Por eso la iglesia enseña que debemos bautizar a los bebés lo antes posible. Que el trabajo de convertirse en una nueva creación comience lo antes posible. Y no dejes de permitir que la gracia del Bautismo nos transforme. Dios derrama esta gracia sobre nuestras almas una y otra vez para que crezcamos como semillas regadas. Esa es una de las razones por las que usamos agua bendita para firmarnos con la cruz cuando entramos en la iglesia. Oramos para que Dios siga derramando la gracia del bautismo en nuestras almas para que podamos seguir transformándonos en una nueva creación mientras avanzamos hacia el cielo.
