Let’s talk about love. Each person in this building, each person in this world is loved. We were all created as an act of Love by Love himself. And God loves us. I could stop there. But you see, love is not content to be merely words. Love demands action. God showed his love in a particular way for his people throughout history again and again. He fed them when they were hungry. When I think of the way my mom loved me, I am reminded of her cooking. She would spend hours in the kitchen making healthy meals each day. She showed her love for me by feeding me.

In the Gospel, Jesus multiplied loaves and fishes to feed the hungry crowd. Now Jesus could have fed the people directly, but he chose to allow a young boy to participate in this act of love. That young boy brought the little amount of food that he had, and offered it to Jesus. Jesus accepted that beautiful act of love, that sacrifice, and multiplied the gift to feed everyone. Jesus wants us to be involved in his act of love for us.

In the Mass, we take up a collection each Sunday. This goes all the way back to the Old Testament with Melchizedek. But today, it is our way of participating in the love of Jesus. You also may notice that the collection is brought forward each Sunday alongside the gifts of bread and wine. The gifts of bread and wine will become Jesus himself, and the sacrifices we place in the basket unite our hearts to his. The amount that we place in the basket is only as important as the sacrifice that we make. The collection is also not limited to only parents. Anyone who can bring an offering is invited to make that gift. There was another story of a poor widow who only put 2 small coins in the basket, and yet Jesus noticed and praised her for her sacrifice.

We are not meant to be merely passive bystanders in the sacrifice of the Eucharist. We are meant to be united with this offering of Christ. If we are in a place where we simply are unable to give anything, place your heart in the basket to be brought forward. Jesus laid down his life on the Cross. He sacrificed Himself for us out of love for us. This type of love demands a response from us. Will we make a sacrifice for Him?

Hablemos del amor. Cada persona en este edificio, cada persona en este mundo es amada. Todos fuimos creados como un acto de Amor por el Amor mismo. Y Dios nos ama. Podría detenerme ahí. Pero ya ves, el amor no se contenta con ser meras palabras. El amor exige acción. Dios mostró su amor de una manera particular por su pueblo a lo largo de la historia una y otra vez. Él les daba de comer cuando tenían hambre. Cuando pienso en la forma en que mi mamá me amaba, me acuerdo de su cocina. Pasaba horas en la cocina preparando comidas saludables todos los días. Ella mostró su amor por mí alimentándome.

En el Evangelio, Jesús multiplicó los panes y los peces para alimentar a la multitud hambrienta. Ahora bien, Jesús podría haber alimentado a la gente directamente, pero decidió permitir que un niño participara en este acto de amor. Ese joven trajo la poca cantidad de comida que tenía y se la ofreció a Jesús. Jesús aceptó ese hermoso acto de amor, ese sacrificio, y multiplicó el don para alimentar a todos. Jesús quiere que nos involucremos en su acto de amor por nosotros.

En la Misa, hacemos una colecta cada domingo. Esto se remonta al Antiguo Testamento con Melquisedec. Pero hoy, es nuestra manera de participar en el amor de Jesús. También puede notar que la colecta se adelanta cada domingo junto con los regalos de pan y vino. Los dones del pan y el vino se convertirán en Jesús mismo, y los sacrificios que coloquemos en la canasta unirán nuestros corazones al suyo. La cantidad que colocamos en la canasta es tan importante como el sacrificio que hacemos. La colección tampoco se limita solo a los padres. Cualquiera que pueda traer una ofrenda está invitado a hacer ese regalo. Hubo otra historia de una viuda pobre que solo puso 2 monedas pequeñas en la canasta, y sin embargo, Jesús la notó y la alabó por su sacrificio.

No estamos destinados a ser meros espectadores pasivos en el sacrificio de la Eucaristía. Estamos destinados a estar unidos con esta ofrenda de Cristo. Si estamos en un lugar donde simplemente no podemos dar nada, coloquen su corazón en la canasta para que nos saquen adelante. Jesús dio su vida en la Cruz. Él se sacrificó por nosotros por amor a nosotros. Este tipo de amor exige una respuesta de nuestra parte. ¿Haremos un sacrificio por Él?
