The book of Revelation is kind of scary. There are stories of dragons and diseases and people suffering and getting killed. We got to hear from the first chapter of the Book of Revelation which gives us the passage in order to understand the whole story. Jesus says to John, “do not be afraid. I am the first and the last, the one who lives. Once I was dead, but now I am alive forever and ever. I hold the keys to death and the netherworld.” This passage is what we must hold on to admit the uncertainties in our own lives. When we are faced with things that make us afraid. When the dragon attacks us. When we suffer diseases. When people try to hurt us. I know who holds the keys.

Sin is a terrible thing. It puts up a wall between us and the love of God. And pretty soon, as we try to continue living our lives without the love of God, it becomes more and more difficult. It sure doesn’t work if I try to drive my car and there is no gasoline in the tank. It is often at our lowest point that we give up and turn back to the Lord. Lord, I am going nowhere. I have tried every way I could think of, but nothing could fix this brokenness within me. Lord, have mercy on me.

These are the words that Jesus wants to hear from us. When Jesus spoke to Sister Faustina, he told us that all of our sins have not wounded his heart as painfully as our present lack of trust – that after so many effects of his love and mercy, we should still doubt his goodness. In the Gospel, Thomas doubted the Lord. He stubbornly refused to believe that Jesus had truly risen from the dead. The Lord responded by showing up. He came to Thomas after Thomas refused to come to Him. And today the Lord keeps showing up for us each day in the Holy Eucharist. Each time we come to the sacrament of Confession. Our Lord comes to us to call us back to Him, so that we may trust in his mercy.

I have heard many people declare that their sins are too great. Or that they have too many sins to confess, and it would just be impossible. And today, if that is you, I want to invite you to receive the mercy of Christ. Christ holds the keys to death and the netherworld. He has the power to heal what is broken in us. Christ will be present on this altar today during Mass, and in the afternoon. The sacrament of Confession will be available all afternoon. Christ is waiting for us. Let us proclaim our trust in Him.

El libro de Apocalipsis es un poco aterrador. Hay historias de dragones y enfermedades y gente que sufre y es asesinada. Pudimos escuchar el primer capítulo del libro de Apocalipsis que nos da el pasaje para entender toda la historia. Jesús le dice a Juan: “No temas. Yo soy el primero y el último, el que vive. Una vez estuve muerto, pero ahora estoy vivo por los siglos de los siglos. Yo tengo las llaves de la muerte y del inframundo”. Este pasaje es a lo que debemos aferrarnos para admitir las incertidumbres en nuestras propias vidas. Cuando nos enfrentamos a cosas que nos dan miedo. Cuando el dragón nos ataca. Cuando padecemos enfermedades. Cuando la gente trata de hacernos daño. Sé quién tiene las llaves.

El pecado es una cosa terrible. Levanta un muro entre nosotros y el amor de Dios. Y muy pronto, a medida que tratamos de seguir viviendo nuestras vidas sin el amor de Dios, se vuelve más y más difícil. Seguro que no funciona si intento conducir mi coche y no hay gasolina en el tanque. A menudo es en nuestro punto más bajo que nos damos por vencidos y volvemos al Señor. Señor, no voy a ninguna parte. Lo he intentado de todas las formas que se me ocurrieron, pero nada pudo arreglar este quebrantamiento dentro de mí. Señor, ten piedad de mí.

Estas son las palabras que Jesús quiere oír de nosotros. Cuando Jesús habló a Sor Faustina, nos dijo que todos nuestros pecados no han herido su corazón tan dolorosamente como nuestra actual falta de confianza, que después de tantos efectos de su amor y misericordia, todavía deberíamos dudar de su bondad. En el Evangelio, Tomás dudaba del Señor. Se negó obstinadamente a creer que Jesús realmente había resucitado de entre los muertos. El Señor respondió apareciendo. Vino a Tomás después de que Tomás se negó a ir a Él. Y hoy el Señor sigue apareciendo por nosotros cada día en la Sagrada Eucaristía. Cada vez que llegamos al sacramento de la Confesión. Nuestro Señor viene a nosotros para llamarnos a volver a Él, para que confiemos en su misericordia.

He escuchado a muchas personas declarar que sus pecados son demasiado grandes. O que tienen demasiados pecados que confesar, y sería simplemente imposible. Y hoy, si ese eres tú, quiero invitarte a recibir la misericordia de Cristo. Cristo tiene las llaves de la muerte y del inframundo. Él tiene el poder de sanar lo que está roto en nosotros. Cristo estará presente en este altar hoy durante la misa y por la tarde. El sacramento de la Confesión estará disponible durante toda la tarde. Cristo nos está esperando. Proclamemos nuestra confianza en Él.
