I stayed up quite late watching a series on Netflix. I told myself that I needed to go to bed, but the episode would end, and I had to know what was going to happen next. I was completely focused on the story that not even sleep could get me to stop. On a different occasion, about 9 years ago, I remember staying up all night long until the sun rose in the morning. This time there was no Netflix involved though. I was staying the night in a Church, praying at the very spot where Jesus was crucified. Wonder and awe kept me awake that night. The next day wasn’t so good, but then again, neither was the day after watching Netflix. But the important questions for us are, will I stay awake, and will it be for Jesus?

Jesus gives us some strong words of warning. We do not know when the Lord will come, so we need to be prepared. Now Advent is a season of joyful preparation. We are preparing to celebrate the birth of Christ and rejoice in the humble love of God who came as an infant in a manger. But that joyful preparation must not distract us from our preparation for Christ’s second return.

St Paul says that salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed, so wake up! When St Paul wrote that letter, it was around 57 AD. Think about that. Only 24 years after the death of Christ and we need to get ready for his second coming. It has been close to 2000 years now. Are we any more prepared than they were? The way to get ready for the coming of Christ is by casting off the deeds of darkness and putting on the armor of light.

I am sure that many of us still need to figure out what gifts we should give for Christmas. What gift will we give Jesus? Starting today, in order to enter into this season of Advent, I will be giving up a few things that keep me from him. Things which are fine, but ultimately, they do not help me grow closer to Jesus. Do I need to spend as much time on Facebook or Youtube? Do I need to watch Netflix? The little actions of giving up prioritizing these things will enable me to prioritize giving my heart to Jesus.

The whole world is preparing to celebrate the birthday of Jesus at Christmas. Let’s not lose sight of the reason for this season. That we might give to Jesus what he truly desires. Lord, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. So I unite my heart to yours, so that I may be spiritually awake when you come again.

Me quedé despierto bastante tarde viendo una serie en Netflix. Me dije a mí mismo que tenía que irme a la cama, pero que el episodio terminaría y tenía que saber qué iba a pasar después. Estaba completamente concentrado en la historia y ni siquiera dormir podía detenerme. En otra ocasión, hace unos 9 años, recuerdo que me quedé despierto toda la noche hasta que salió el sol por la mañana. Esta vez no hubo Netflix involucrado. Me quedé a pasar la noche en una iglesia, rezando justo en el lugar donde Jesús fue crucificado. La maravilla y el asombro me mantuvieron despierto esa noche. El día siguiente no fue tan bueno, pero tampoco lo fue el día siguiente viendo Netflix. Pero las preguntas importantes para nosotros son: ¿me quedaré despierto y será por Jesús?

Jesús nos da unas palabras de advertencia muy fuertes. No sabemos cuándo vendrá el Señor, así que debemos estar preparados. Ahora el Adviento es una temporada de alegre preparación. Nos estamos preparando para celebrar el nacimiento de Cristo y alegrarnos en el humilde amor de Dios, que llegó de niño en un pesebre. Pero esa alegre preparación no debe distraernos de nuestra preparación para el segundo regreso de Cristo.

San Pablo dice que la salvación está más cerca de nosotros ahora que cuando creímos por primera vez, ¡así que despierta! Cuando San Pablo escribió esa carta, era alrededor del año 57 d.C. Piénsalo. Solo 24 años después de la muerte de Cristo y tenemos que prepararnos para su segunda venida. Ya han pasado cerca de 2000 años. ¿Estamos más preparados que ellos? La forma de prepararse para la venida de Cristo es desechando las acciones de oscuridad y poniéndose la armadura de luz.

Estoy segura de que muchos de nosotros aún tenemos que decidir qué regalos deberíamos regalar por Navidad. ¿Qué regalo le daremos a Jesús? A partir de hoy, para entrar en esta temporada de Adviento, renunciaré a algunas cosas que me alejan de él. Cosas que están bien, pero al final, no me ayudan a acercarme más a Jesús. ¿Necesito pasar tanto tiempo en Facebook o en YouTube? ¿Necesito ver Netflix? Las pequeñas acciones de dejar de priorizar estas cosas me permitirán priorizar entregar mi corazón a Jesús.

Todo el mundo se está preparando para celebrar el cumpleaños de Jesús en Navidad. No perdamos de vista la razón de esta temporada. Para que podamos dar a Jesús lo que realmente desea. Señor, hágase tu voluntad, en la tierra como en el cielo. Así que uno mi corazón al tuyo, para poder estar espiritualmente despierto cuando vuelvas.
