Shall I crucify your king? We have no king but Caesar. Way back in the Old Testament, the Jewish people begged Samuel to appoint a king for them. “Appoint a king for us like all the other nations have.” Samuel tried to stop them, but in the end the Lord allowed it. They are not rejecting you, they are rejecting me. This rejection of the Lord continued over and over throughout the Old Testament all the way into the New Testament. In fact, that rejection continues even today. When you and I say with the crowds, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”

When have I rejected Christ as king? The answer for you and I is the same. Not only when we commit sin deliberately, but also when we turn away from following him in order to go along with everyone else. When the whole group is ready to go to the bar and it would look strange for you not to go with them. When the whole group is criticizing someone and it would look strange for you to not agree with them. When the whole group is ok breaking one of the commandments because it’s not really that important, and we follow the crowd.

Today we acknowledge our own sinfulness. We acknowledge what our sins have cost us. Our Savior, nailed to the Cross because we agreed with the crowds. And we turn back to him, yet again, with sorrow in our hearts and a desire to follow him to the end. Let us come to the Cross with contrite hearts and worship our Lord, and pray for his mercy upon us, and upon the whole world.

¿Crucifico a tu rey? No tenemos rey más que César. Hace mucho tiempo, en el Antiguo Testamento, el pueblo judío suplicó a Samuel que nombrara un rey para ellos. “Nombra un rey para nosotros como han hecho todas las demás naciones.” Samuel intentó detenerlos, pero al final el Señor lo permitió. No te están rechazando a ti, me están rechazando a mí. Este rechazo al Señor continuó una y otra vez a lo largo del Antiguo Testamento hasta el Nuevo Testamento. De hecho, ese rechazo continúa incluso hoy en día. Cuando tú y yo decimos entre la multitud, “¡Crucificadle! ¡Crucifícalo!”

¿Cuándo he rechazado a Cristo como rey? La respuesta para ti y para mí es la misma. No solo cuando pecamos deliberadamente, sino también cuando nos apartamos de seguirle para seguir a los demás. Cuando todo el grupo esté listo para ir al bar y te parecería raro no ir con ellos. Cuando todo el grupo critica a alguien y te parecería extraño no estar de acuerdo con esa persona. Cuando todo el grupo está dispuesto a romper uno de los mandamientos porque no es tan importante, y seguimos a la multitud.

Hoy reconocemos nuestra propia pecaminosidad. Reconocemos lo que nuestros pecados nos han costado. Nuestro Salvador, clavado a la Cruz porque coincidimos con la multitud. Y volvemos a él, una vez más, con tristeza en el corazón y el deseo de seguirle hasta el final. Venamos a la Cruz con corazones contritos y adoremos a nuestro Señor, y oremos por su misericordia sobre nosotros y sobre todo el mundo.
