Joseph received another message from an angel in a dream. This message led him to pack up Jesus and Mary and quickly flee to Egypt so they would be safe from Herod. Herod is a great symbol of the world in opposition to Christ. You see, he was a king who was fake. He was appointed king by the Roman emperor, basically to just act as a puppet. He wasn’t even fully Jewish. Just like any other fake king, he was constantly worried about someone else arriving to kick him off his throne. Then he hears of the birth of the true king, and he gets very nervous. He will do anything to get rid of Jesus so he can hold on to his power and control.

Now the radical act of Joseph leading Mary and Jesus to Egypt to keep them safe from Herod is a sign of his role as a protector. He was not simply the guy who worked and brought home money to feed his family. He was also the shield who kept his family safe from harm. And this is the role that fathers are called to have today. It is not just about making enough money to pay the bills. How are fathers protecting their families from Herod today?

Herod continues to cause problems even today by the way that people imitate his example. They hold onto their own sense of control and power and refuse to follow anyone, especially God. This leads to selfishness, division, and ultimately the death of a good family. Joseph protected the Holy Family in the way that he accepted the call of God to pack up and move. He accepted the difficulty of travelling with a newborn baby to a foreign country with no real plans. He accepted the struggle of moving slowly with Mary as she recovered from her pregnancy. He did not move at his own pace, but at God’s pace, acting a protector.

Fathers today must protect their families not just from people who would cause them physical harm, but also from spiritual attacks. Perhaps one of the most dangerous is being indifferent. It doesn’t matter what Church you go to. It doesn’t even matter if you go to Church. It doesn’t matter what you believe. It doesn’t matter how you live, as long as you don’t hurt me. This attitude is destroying families and continuing the very practice of King Herod 2000 years ago. Today, fathers must stand up for the truth. Protecting their families by allow God to lead them through the difficulties of this life.

The strongest attack against being indifferent is zealous love. A father than is crazy in love with God and his wife and children is a sign that God is more powerful than the lies of the enemy. And that powerful love is returned by the wife and children creates a family that is wrapped in God’s love rather than the indifference of this world. Be zealous in your love. Give honor and glory to God, follow his Church, and protect your family just as St Joseph did, so that the victory may belong to the true king.

José recibió otro mensaje de un ángel en un sueño. Este mensaje le llevó a recoger a Jesús y María y huir rápidamente a Egipto para que estuvieran a salvo de Herodes. Herodes es un gran símbolo del mundo en oposición a Cristo. Verás, era un rey falso. Fue nombrado rey por el emperador romano, básicamente para actuar como marioneta. Ni siquiera era completamente judío. Como cualquier otro falso rey, estaba constantemente preocupado por que alguien más llegara para echarle de su trono. Herodes sigue causando problemas incluso hoy en día por la forma en que la gente imita su ejemplo. Los padres de hoy deben proteger a sus familias no solo de personas que les causarían daño físico, sino también de ataques espirituales. Quizá una de las más peligrosas sea ser indiferente. No importa a qué iglesia vayas. Ni siquiera importa si vas a la iglesia. No importa en qué creas. No importa cómo vivas, mientras no me hagas daño. Esta actitud está destruyendo familias y continuando la práctica misma del rey Herodes hace 2000 años. Hoy, los padres deben defender la verdad. Proteger a sus familias permitiendo que Dios los guíe a través de las dificultades de esta vida.

El ataque más fuerte contra la indiferencia es el amor fervoroso. Un padre que está locamente enamorado de Dios, de su esposa e hijos es una señal de que Dios es más poderoso que las mentiras del enemigo. Y ese amor poderoso que la esposa y los hijos corresponden crea una familia envuelta en el amor de Dios en lugar de la indiferencia de este mundo. Sé celoso en tu amor. Honra y gloria a Dios, sigue su Iglesia y protege a tu familia tal como hizo San José, para que la victoria pertenezca al verdadero rey.
