Grace is the free gift that God bestows on us to help us respond to his call to become children of God, and partakers of the divine nature and eternal life. We are honestly celebrating God’s grace today as we celebrate the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. You see, God poured out his grace into her soul, and thus preserved her from all stain of sin from the moment she was conceived in the womb of her mother.

That is what we believe, and what we celebrate today. But here is the big problem. Where is that in the bible? You will not find it spelled out clearly like that if you were to open your bible and read through it. So it helps for us to understand the original language from our Gospel. The Angel Gabriel appears to the Virgin Mary and says, “Hail, Full of Grace. The Lord is with you.” Kecharitomene. Notice that the Angel does not call Mary by her name like we do when we pray a Rosary. Her very identity is the fullness and perfection of God’s grace. That is what that word means.

As the new Eve, that is, mother of all creation, Mary is given a special privilege in being preserved from all sin. Just as Adam and Eve were created without sin, so Mary is created without sin as she prepares to give birth to Jesus. But I want to talk about the logic of it now. You see, St. Paul reminds us that all people have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. And for you and I, that is absolutely true. But think about the choice that Mary is going to make when the angel Gabriel asks her if she wants to be the mother of God. If she had any stain of sin on her soul, she would have been compelled to say yes so that she could save herself. Like if she was in a boat that was sinking with many other people, and God appears and asks her if she wants to be saved. Of course she is going to say yes. But if she is free from sin, her choice is completely free. She is on the shore, watching the boat sink, and God asks her if she wants to save the boat. Now her response is a free response of love rather than having to respond yes so she can save her own life as well.

God still saved her. He just saved her before Christ died on the Cross so that she might have the free choice to participate in his plan. So let us pray and ask the intercession of our mother so that we too might freely choose to follow Christ out of love. She desires God’s will for each one of us, that we might become children of God and partakers of the divine nature and eternal life. And so we entrust ourselves to Mary who said yes, asking for the grace from God to say yes like she did.

La gracia es el don gratuito que Dios nos concede para ayudarnos a responder a su llamado a convertirnos en hijos de Dios y en participantes de la naturaleza divina y la vida eterna. Hoy celebramos honestamente la gracia de Dios mientras celebramos la Inmaculada Concepción de la Virgen María. Verás, Dios derramó su gracia en su alma, y así la salvó de toda mancha de pecado desde el momento en que fue concebida en el vientre de su madre.

Eso es lo que creemos y lo que celebramos hoy. Pero aquí está el gran problema. ¿Dónde está eso en la Biblia? No lo verás tan claro si abres tu Biblia y la lees. Como nueva Eva, es decir, madre de toda la creación, a María se le concede un privilegio especial al ser preservada de todo pecado. Así como Adán y Eva fueron creados sin pecado, así María es creada sin pecado mientras se prepara para dar a luz a Jesús. Pero ahora quiero hablar de la lógica de todo esto. Verás, San Pablo nos recuerda que todas las personas han pecado y han quedado cortas de la gloria de Dios. Y para ti y para mí, eso es absolutamente cierto. Pero piensa en la decisión que va a tomar María cuando el ángel Gabriel le pregunte si quiere ser la madre de Dios. Si tuviera alguna mancha de pecado en el alma, se habría visto obligada a decir que sí para poder salvarse. Como si estuviera en un barco que se hunde con muchas otras personas, y Dios apareciera y le preguntara si quiere ser salvada. Por supuesto que va a decir que sí. Pero si está libre de pecado, su elección es completamente libre. Está en la orilla, viendo cómo el barco se hunde, y Dios le pregunta si quiere salvar el barco. Ahora su respuesta es una respuesta libre de amor en lugar de que la respuesta sí, para que ella también pueda salvar su propia vida.

Dios aún la salvó. Él la salvó antes de que Cristo muriera en la Cruz para que tuviera la libre elección de participar en su plan. Así que oremos y pidamos la intercesión de nuestra madre para que nosotros también podamos elegir libremente seguir a Cristo por amor.
