On the eighth day, he was circumcised and named Jesus. The Bible is funny with numbers. There is never a number in the bible that was by chance. And for us, we celebrate this great feast of the Mother of God on the eighth day of after Christmas. We look back to Genesis and see that God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh. So what happened on the eighth day? The Jewish tradition is that it is the beginning of a new creation. The new day one. Jesus receives his name as given by the angel, which means “God saves”, and God begins his new work of salvation.

There is a lot happening here, and we turn to Mary to see her response to God’s work. She kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart. The words used here are translated to literally mean she treasured these things like you place a deposit in a bank, and she pieced them together in her mind. How often have we done that? I think it is much easier to just let things go rather than try to figure them out. And so we give up way too early.

What does it mean that God has come to save his people? How can I be saved? How is God going to lead me to Him? We do not speak of our salvation in past tense, but in present tense. God is working on saving me right now. He is giving me the grace that I need to follow his commandments. He is changing my heart from loving sin to loving Him. And I am a work in progress.

This is where the world tries to hit us hard. This new year, you can become a better version of yourself. You can lose weight. You can get rich. You can find love. What about Jesus? He cannot simply be one goal among many. How is Jesus doing his work of salvation in me today? And am I cooperating with the grace he bestows on me? Let us turn to Mary to see how we can live in a new way this year. Not with more goals of gaining things, but with reflecting and pondering the things that Jesus is doing for me. Let us take our salvation seriously, so that God may transform us into a new creation. Not after we die, but today. That we may become who he wants us to be today, and again, a new creation the next day until we are created anew in the kingdom of heaven.

Al octavo día, fue circuncidado y nombrado Jesús. La Biblia es curiosa con los números. Nunca hay un número en la Biblia que fuera por casualidad. Y para nosotros, celebramos esta gran fiesta de la Madre de Dios el octavo día después de Navidad. Miramos atrás al Génesis y vemos que Dios creó el mundo en seis días y descansó en el séptimo. ¿Y qué pasó en el octavo día? La tradición judía es que es el comienzo de una nueva creación. El nuevo día uno. Jesús recibe su nombre dado por el ángel, que significa “Dios salva”, y Dios comienza su nueva obra de salvación.

Aquí están ocurriendo muchas cosas, y nos dirigimos a María para ver su respuesta ante la obra de Dios. Guardaba todas esas cosas, reflexionando sobre ellas en su corazón. Las palabras que se usan aquí se traducen literalmente como que ella valoraba estas cosas, como si pusieras un depósito en un banco, y las recompuiera en su mente. ¿Con qué frecuencia lo hemos hecho? Creo que es mucho más fácil simplemente dejar pasar las cosas que intentar averiguarlas. Así que nos rendimos demasiado pronto.

¿Qué significa que Dios haya venido a salvar a su pueblo? ¿Cómo puedo salvarme? ¿Cómo va a guiarme Dios hacia Él? No hablamos de nuestra salvación en pasado, sino en presente. Dios está trabajando para salvarme ahora mismo. Me está dando la gracia que necesito para seguir sus mandamientos. Él está cambiando mi corazón de amar el pecado a amarle a Él. Y soy un trabajo en progreso.

Aquí es donde el mundo intenta golpearnos con fuerza. Este nuevo año, puedes convertirte en una mejor versión de ti mismo. Puedes perder peso. Puedes hacerte rico. Puedes encontrar el amor. ¿Y Jesús? No puede ser simplemente un objetivo entre muchos. ¿Cómo está Jesús haciendo su obra de salvación en mí hoy? ¿Y estoy cooperando con la gracia que él me concede? Volvemos hacia María para ver cómo podemos vivir de una manera nueva este año. No con más objetivos de obtener cosas, sino reflexionando y reflexionando sobre las cosas que Jesús está haciendo por mí. Tomemos en serio nuestra salvación, para que Dios pueda transformarnos en una nueva creación. No después de morir, sino hoy. Para que podamos convertirnos en quienes Él quiere que seamos hoy, y de nuevo, una nueva creación al día siguiente hasta que seamos creados de nuevo en el reino de los cielos.
