On this holy day, we hear that Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. While he was there, he sweat drops of blood. We are entering into the last moments of Jesus’ life. This begins his final week. And he chose to go to this garden, which is full of olive trees. The Olive Trees are a symbol of the tree of life in the book of Genesis. And Gethsemane, the name of the garden, means olive press. Jesus is going to be crushed, and from his side will flow forth eternal life.
The palms that we hold in our hands are a symbol of our joy in welcoming the king. And yet after this celebration, we will burn these palms and use the ashes to remember our own mortality on Ash Wednesday. The Church invites us to notice these symbols so that our prayer may become even more personal.
How are we going to enter into this final week with Jesus? We have fallen short of God’s grace again and again. And yet he still opens his arms to welcome us back. Even from the Cross he cries out, Father, forgive them, they know not what they do. This is the desire of his heart. That we might be reconciled to him, and also with each other. It is a big question to ponder. If this was my last week, how would I spend it?
Jesus chose to enter the city of Jerusalem as the people celebrated him. He chose to celebrate the Eucharist with his disciples. He chose to go to the garden and enter into prayer with his heavenly father. He chose to accept the Cross. And he chose to forgive even up to his last breath. How am I being called to imitate his example this week as I honor Jesus, as I celebrate the Eucharist, as I pray, as I suffer, and as I forgive.

Thank you so much! You have given me lots of food for thought and ideas as to how to spend this last week.
Thanks Father Josh Gray
This is so inspiring for all who reads it. Never thought of “my last week” and how will I live it
I need help Father Josh. We moved here to north east Texas 6 months ago. Everyone in our new parish was so happy we were finally moved in. Then came the call…..play music for us at Mass. There has been one frustration after another…..from trying to learn their new Mass parts, to Stetting up the music on the music stand, to learning new songs…you name it,,,,even the keyboard does not sound right. I don’t know what to do because God’s plan is PEACE. This has not been God’s PEACE! Wondering if I should just quit? For now, I am just praying of what does the Lord want me to do,,,,,especially if this was my last week? God bless you Father Josh🙏🙏🙏 Wishing you a blessed happy Easter!
