I recently heard a song on my Spotify playlist that I wanna share with you! It is a pop song, which is right up my alley. This song has a much richer meaning when you look at it with a theological lens. I hope you listen to this song and enjoy it as a prayer!
The song is called “You Know Me.” Of course we acknowledge that the only person who truly knows us is God. The artist wrote this song as a duet between a man and woman who go through a list of various ways that the other person knows them. The opening line sung by the boy acknowledges that their heart is in the hands of the other, and they could break it. Now every relationship we get into is an act of faith for this very reason! When we enter into relationship with God, we place our heart into his hands, and he accepts us completely (including our faults!).
The girl responds by saying that she tries to find some good in everything and it became easier since this relationship began. This becomes our goal when we become Christian. When we enter into the struggle of relationship with Christ, we must start to see things in the light of Christ, and through his eyes. In this way, we begin to see good in everything because we see the fingerprints of the creator on his work.
The next line is sung together saying that this relationship could be a roller coaster, but we are gonna make the most of it. I can personally testify that relationship with Christ has been a rollercoaster. I think all of us experience moments of joy and peace, moments of darkness and temptation, and moments of plain normal. St. Ignatius of Loyola describes these moments in our spiritual life as moments of consolation and desolation, and the space between. We should keep track of our spiritual journey so that in good times we acknowledge who is taking care of us, and in bad times we remember that our God will never abandon us. This song reminds me that during the journey of our life as Christians, no matter what happens, God is faithful.
The transition of this song is beautiful as the relationship grows. The girl admits that the boy knows her, and he responds by agreeing. But as the song progresses, the boy admits to the girl that she knows him, and she responds by acknowledging that he knows her. The relationship has come to complete trust at this point. There is a line which says, “This could amount to nothing when it’s all said and done.” But the following line takes it in a whole new direction! They both sing that they think the other could make them better. They say together that even though they can’t completely understand this deep love, they will never regret anything that helped them to see. This is our faith!!!! We cannot completely understand the deep love God has for us. St. John Vianney once said that if we truly understood how much God loves you, you would die for joy. But our eyes are opened to see when we walk by faith instead of by sight!
The conclusion of the song admits that sure, other people have relationships, but this relationship is on a level that no one else could ever touch. That is our relationship with God. So let us strive for union with God. If God is first in your life, everything else will fall into place. In conclusion, a word from St. Paul’s letter to the Romans. Let us throw off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; let us conduct ourselves properly as in the day!
