There are many mysteries in this world. How does a computer work? Why is my child hungry as soon as we get up from dinner? Any kind of complicated math problem. But those mysteries can be figured out. We can study, pay attention, and learn from others to find the answer. On the other hand, there are mysteries which cannot be understood unless God himself shows us.

I speak to people who say that they understand Catholic beliefs. They were raised Catholic, they went to Catholic school, they talked to priests or other people, and so they can say, I get it. I am not so sure. You see, I’m the priest, and I don’t even understand Catholic beliefs. I was raised Catholic, went to Catholic school, talked to priests and other people, and I still don’t understand Catholic beliefs. I can share some of what the Church teaches. I can tell you why the Church teaches these things. But to understand. To have clear knowledge of what something means. This is impossible for many Catholic beliefs. How is it that bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus each time we celebrate Mass. Jesus said so. He gave the power to his apostles and that power has been passed on. But even that is not understanding. We are celebrating the sacred mysteries of the Mass.

The great mystery that we celebrate today is the Holy Trinity. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, 3 persons, 1 God. This is not a math problem. This is something that simply does not make sense. And yet, if you believe that this is true, that itself is a gift from the Holy Spirit. Each one of us received the Holy Spirit at our Baptism, and a second outpouring at our Confirmation. The Holy Spirit helps us to claim what God has revealed as true, even when it seems impossible in our minds. When we claim that we understand Catholic beliefs, what we do understand comes totally from the Holy Spirit and not from where we went to school or what priest we talked to.

What does this mystery of the Holy Trinity do for us? God shares this intimate secret about himself to us. He is a trinity of persons – existing in eternal love for each other. And he wants us to not only know about Him, but to be joined to Him in that relationship of love. I proclaim my acceptance of this belief, and my desire to be united with his love with one simple action. And I invite you to say the words as you make this action. Proclaim your love for God, who loves you so very much. In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Hay muchos misterios en este mundo. ¿Cómo funciona una computadora? ¿Por qué mi hijo tiene hambre tan pronto como nos levantamos de la cena? Cualquier tipo de problema matemático complicado. Pero esos misterios se pueden resolver. Podemos estudiar, prestar atención y aprender de los demás para encontrar la respuesta. Por otro lado, hay misterios que no se pueden entender a menos que Dios mismo nos los muestre.

Hablo con personas que dicen que entienden las creencias católicas. Fueron criados como católicos, fueron a una escuela católica, hablaron con sacerdotes u otras personas, y entonces pueden decir: “Lo entiendo”. No estoy tan seguro. Verás, yo soy el sacerdote y ni siquiera entiendo las creencias católicas. Me criaron como católico, fui a una escuela católica, hablé con sacerdotes y otras personas, y todavía no entiendo las creencias católicas. Puedo compartir algo de lo que la Iglesia enseña. Te puedo decir por qué la Iglesia enseña estas cosas. Sino para entender. Tener un conocimiento claro de lo que significa algo. Esto es imposible para muchas creencias católicas. ¿Cómo es que el pan y el vino se convierten en el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Jesús cada vez que celebramos la Misa?, lo dijo Jesús. Él le dio el poder a sus apóstoles y ese poder ha sido transmitido. Pero ni siquiera eso es comprensión. Estamos celebrando los sagrados misterios de la Misa.

El gran misterio que celebramos hoy es la Santísima Trinidad. El Padre, el Hijo y el Espíritu Santo, 3 personas, 1 Dios. Esto no es un problema matemático. Esto es algo que simplemente no tiene sentido. Y sin embargo, si usted cree que esto es verdad, eso en sí mismo es un regalo del Espíritu Santo. Cada uno de nosotros recibió el Espíritu Santo en nuestro Bautismo, y un segundo derramamiento en nuestra Confirmación. El Espíritu Santo nos ayuda a reclamar lo que Dios ha revelado como verdad, incluso cuando parece imposible en nuestras mentes. Cuando afirmamos que entendemos las creencias católicas, lo que entendemos proviene totalmente del Espíritu Santo y no del lugar donde fuimos a la escuela o con qué sacerdote hablamos.

¿Qué hace por nosotros este misterio de la Santísima Trinidad? Dios nos comparte este secreto íntimo acerca de sí mismo. Él es una trinidad de personas, que existen en amor eterno los unos por los otros. Y quiere que no solo sepamos de Él, sino que estemos unidos a Él en esa relación de amor. Proclamo mi aceptación de esta creencia, y mi deseo de unirme a su amor con una simple acción. Y los invito a decir las palabras mientras hacen esta acción. Proclama tu amor por Dios, que te ama tanto. En el Nombre del Padre, y del Hijo, y del Espíritu Santo.
